Michigan Head Coach Erik Bakich
Opening statement ... "In tournament baseball it's pitching, defense, timely hitting -- I think that's a pretty popular phrase that you hear from a lot of these conference tournaments going around the country because that's what you need in the postseason in terms of baseball. In the last regular-season game, we played against Oklahoma State; we got a heavy dose of that. We got good pitching, we got good defense, we got timely hitting, and obviously that was the storyline. So those were all the storylines today. Brett Adcock had a quality start pitching in the seventh, one-run ball, Mac Lozer and Jacob Cronenworth doing their job. The defense we got today really enabled us to put that zero up. The defense and the pitching was outstanding."
On the early start ... "This is the most fun time of the year, so energy shouldn't even be an issue. We got up at 6:15 -- that was our breakfast -- and the guys were bouncing around and eating scrambled eggs more than they normally should have been. So I think there's just been an energy about them since we got here yesterday. They're excited to be here and looking to play well."
On planning to using their players creatively throughout the tournament ... "We're trying to not even think that way. We're going to treat each game as the only game we're playing all week. So if we have to use starters to relieve, relievers to start, we're just going to, but the focus is on one day at a time, one game at a time. We kind of went into it with that mindset -- we'll do whatever it takes to make sure we play our best baseball. Any tournament, or weekend series, or whatever you have, where you can get that kind of quality start out of your first pitcher, that's a nice thing to have and it's an advantage. Our mindset is not looking at the entire week, it"s looking at one day. That's all we can do."

On the importance of eliminating walks ... "It's definitely a big key. Free passes can hurt you in many ways. Just eliminating, and even errors, is a huge help for the team and gives us a better chance to win."
On the great defense ... "Defense definitely picked me up today. There was a lot of quality defense behind us."
U-M Senior Jackson Glines
On going 3-for-4 to start the tournament ... "It's a great way to start the Big Ten Tournament. I struck out my first time so I was just kind of in a hole already, but it was good to get a couple of hits out of the way -- get that first one out of the way and then hopefully get a couple more."
U-M Sophomore Johnny Slater
On the energy leading into the first game ... "I think the Oklahoma State series really fired us up. That energy just flowed into the tournament. Coach was saying we played really well at that Saturday game in the Oklahoma State series, so it kind of just flowed into today and hopefully into the future of the tournament."
