LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Senior Kyle Jusick hit a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game with No. 3 national seed Louisville at three, but a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth by Devin Hairston propelled the Cardinals to a 4-3 win over the University of Michigan baseball team in game four of the NCAA Louisville Regional Saturday afternoon (May 30) at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Michigan will now face Bradley in an elimination game Sunday afternoon (May 31) at noon. The winner of that game will face Louisville at 4 p.m., needing to defeat the Cardinals twice.
The beginning of the game was a pitcher's duel between sophomore Brett Adcock and Louisville's Brendan McKay, even with a 53-minute rain delay in the second inning. Sophomore Carmen Benedetti broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth. It is his fourth round tripper of the season and his 67th run batted in of the year.
Michigan kept that 1-0 advantage until the top of the seventh when Danny Rosenbaum hit a two-run home run to the gap in left, giving the Cards the 2-1 advantage. Louisville added an unearned run in the eighth on Corey Ray's RBI single. In the bottom of the eighth, McKay got two quick outs but walked freshman Jake Bivens. Louisville brought in Drew Harrington to pitch. Senior Jackson Glines then reached on an error, and Benedetti walked to load the bases. Closer Zack Burdi came in, and Jusick greeted him with the two-run single to tie the game at three.
Rosenbaum led off the ninth with a single. Pinch runner Colin Lyman went to second on a groundout and stole third. He scored on Hairston's sacrifice fly to right. Fifth-year senior Kendall Patrick reached on a two-out single in the ninth, but a Burdi strikeout ended the game.
Adcock struck out six in seven innings of work. He allowed two runs and three hits while walking three. Junior Jacob Cronenworth took the loss, allowing a run and three hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Classmate Travis Maezes led U-M's offense with two hits, while both teams had six hits on the day.
