MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Senior Eric Jacobson executed a squeeze bunt in the top of the 10th inning, scoring junior Cody Bruder and lifting the University of Michigan baseball team to a 6-5, 10-inning win over Central Michigan Wednesday afternoon (May 6) at Theunissen Stadium.
Bruder led off the top of the 10th with a double down the left-field line. Freshman Jake Bivens bunted Bruder to third base. After fifth-year senior Kendall Patrick was hit by a pitch, Jacobson, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the ninth, laid down the bunt for the game-winning run.
The Wolverines used some two-out magic to score three runs in the top of the first frame. Junior Travis Maezes and sophomore Carmen Benedetti both drew two-out walks. Bruder brought in Maezes with a single to center. After a walk to Bivens, Patrick drove in a pair of runs with a single to the gap in right field. Benedetti then made it 5-1 in the top of the second with a double to left, scoring senior Kevin White and junior Jacob Cronenworth.
Central scored a run without a hit in the bottom of the second. Nick Regnier reached second on a throwing error. He moved to third on a balk and scored on Daniel Jipping's groundout. Then in the third, Tyler Huntey doubled down the left-field line to score a pair, cutting U-M's lead to 5-3. The Chips scored two runs in the fifth on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk. Michigan got a groundout to end that inning with the bases loaded. Both teams put zeroes on the board until the 10th.
Cronenworth earned the win on the mound for the Maize and Blue. He struck out four in two innings of relief. Senior/junior Matt Ogden went the first 4.1 innings, striking out a pair and giving up three hits and three earned runs with two walks. Freshman Bryan Pall had two strikeouts and did not give up a hit in 2.1 innings of relief.
Bruder and Bivens had two hits apiece for Michigan. Bruder also scored a pair of runs in the win.
Michigan starts its final Big Ten series of the season Friday night (May 8) against Northwestern. First pitch is at 6 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
