ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team used a late barrage of goals to highlight a 4-1 triumph against Davidson on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 13) in front of 629 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. It marks the Wolverines' fourth consecutive win.
"I thought it was a good team win today," said Michigan head coach Marcia Pankratz. "We followed the game plan, really passed the ball well and were really patient coming out of the backfield. That's what we asked them to do, and they continued to do that all game even when the balls weren't scoring early on. We thought the whole team played well, and I'm proud of them."
After holding a narrow one-goal lead for a majority of the game, Michigan provided itself a late cushion with three goals within a 1:25 window late in the closing minutes of the second half.
Senior Shannon Scavelli netted two of the late tallies, kicking off the surge with her first goal of the season at the 64:09 mark, accepting a pass into the circle from sophomore Veerle Lubbers before turning and firing it to the opposite corner of the cage. Scavelli converted again just 24 seconds later, at 64:33, driving the ball into the circle from midfield and sailing a high shot into the cage.
The Wolverines were not done, adding one more on a penalty-corner opportunity at 65:34 as senior Lauren Thomas converted on the direct shot, which deflected off a Davidson defender in the front of the net. Senior Jaime Dean earned an assist on the insert.
The Wildcats spoiled Michigan's shutout bid on a corner goal with time expired. Melissa Funsten carried the ball to the middle of the circle and knocked it through the scrum in front and into the lower right corner.
Sophomore Katie Trombetta scored the lone goal of the first half -- the game-winner -- at the 9:46 mark on U-M's second corner attack of the contest. Thomas, instead of taking the direct shot, dished the ball to Trombetta, who hammered a shot to the opposite lower corner of the cage. It is the first goal of her collegiate career.
Michigan outshot the Wildcats, 22-12, and outcornered them, 11-6. Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Swenson was spectacular in the cage, earning seven saves without a goal allowed through 64:33 of play; senior/junior Chris Lueb was in goal for Davidson's corner tally. Wildcat goalkeeper Emily Leytham recorded eight saves.
The Wolverines are back at home next weekend and will kick off Big Ten Conference play on Friday (Sept. 18) with a 6 p.m. slate against Penn State at Ocker Field. U-M will close out its homestand with a 2 p.m. game against Kent State on Sunday (Sept. 20).
