ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Lulu Haidar headed home the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to give the University of Michigan women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Iowa on Sunday (Sept. 20) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines are now a perfect 2-0 in Big Ten play, as they also defeated Nebraska, 2-0, on Friday (Sept. 18).
Haidar's header was Michigan's 27th and final shot of the match. Prior to that, the Wolverines had outshot the Hawkeyes, 26-3. As the play developed, senior captain Christina Murillo played a ball to junior/sophomore Ani Sarkisian just inside the left side of the penalty box, Sarkisian took a touch, shielded her defender and played it back out wide to Murillo, who lofted a ball toward the far post. Haidar got herself into position, jumped and met the ball in the air, heading it into the right side of the goal.
"This team is a bunch of fighters so we don't give up until it says zero on the clock," said Haidar. "There was a little over a minute left, and that's when you have to keep pushing. It was a great ball by Tina (Murillo), and I just put myself in the right position like we've been working on in practice."
Just before that, Sarkisian had one of Michigan's best looks on net as she ripped a hard shot from 20 yards out just wide of the upper right corner.
In the first half, Michigan outshot Iowa, 11-2, producing several quality chances early, including a shot and a diving header from sophomore Taylor Timko in the fifth and 15th minute, respectively, that was just wide.
Iowa's best look in the first half came in the 35th minute when Rose Ripslinger fired a shot toward net from 25 yards out, but Michigan goalkeeper Sarah Jackson hurried back to her line in time to tip it over the crossbar.
With six minutes to go in the first half, Iowa played a long ball in behind the Wolverine defense, but junior Madisson Lewis ran down the Hawkeye forward on a breakaway and stole the ball to spoil Iowa's shot at goal.
Behind Jackson and Michigan's defense, the Wolverines have allowed just 11 shots and recorded two clean slates through two Big Ten matches. U-M has also held a 24-3 advantage in corner kicks in those matches, including 12-1 this afternoon.
"I thought our whole team defending was fantastic today -- we didn't give Iowa much of anything," said head coach Greg Ryan. We're rock solid in the defending category, and Sarah (Jackson) made that great save in the first half to tip the ball over the crossbar -- she did well to get back and make that save."
