ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team saw its season end in heartbreaking fashion, as it played to a 2-2 draw with Illinois State and then came up short, 5-4, in a penalty shootout in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament on Saturday (Nov. 12) inside U-M Soccer Stadium. The Redbirds will advance and face Duke in the second round.

Despite controlling the majority of possession and holding a 9-2 advantage in shots in the opening half, Michigan found itself trailing 1-0 at the halftime break. ISU got on the board first, as Abby Basler played a low ball across the middle of the box to Lauren Koehl, who scored from 10 yards out in the 37th minute.
The Wolverines found the equalizer in the 51st minute on freshman Jada Dayne's first career goal. Sophomore Reilly Martin played a lofty free kick from 30 yards out into the center of the penalty box, where Dayne flicked it into the right side of the net past ISU keeper Haley Smith.
The back-and-forth affair continued in the 68th minute, when the Redbirds got in behind Michigan's defense and tallied the go-ahead goal. Kelli Zickert slotted a ball ahead to Emily Dickman, who found herself one on one with U-M goalkeeper Sarah Jackson and tucked it in the corner. Less than eight minutes later, the Maize and Blue once again found the tying goal. The scoring play once again started with a long ball from Martin, and the ball got pinged around in the air a couple times, before senior Nicky Waldeck punched it in with her head to tie the game, 2-2, in the 75th minute.
Neither team found the game-winner in the remaining 15 minutes of regulation, and the Wolverines headed to overtime for the sixth time this season. In extra time, Michigan had one goal in each overtime period that was called off due to fouls in the box. Jackson kept U-M in the game in the second overtime when she dove to tip an Illinois State header over the bar.
Despite the exhausted efforts from both teams, the game went to penalty kicks for the second time in three games for the Wolverines. Martin, Waldeck, Anna Soccorsi and Ani Sarkisian each converted their PKs to make it 4-4, while Abby Kastroll's fifth attempt hit off the post to send ISU on to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
With the result going in the books as an official tie, Michigan finished the 2016 season with a 10-5-5 record. The Wolverines, which finished fourth in the Big Ten, advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament for the second straight season and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013.
