WHAT IS HAPPENING
Fans will get their first look at the University of Michigan water polo team this weekend (Nov. 5-6) as they head to Stanford, California, for the USA Water Polo Collegiate Cup.
THE TEAMS
Group A
USC (26-0, 6-0 MPSF in 2016) - Defeated Stanford 8-7 for the NCAA championship in 2016, will be Michigan's first game of the 2017 season.
USA Youth National Team - Coached by Michigan head coach Dr. Marcelo Leonardi, goalkeeper is U-M freshman Heidi Ritner. Will compete at the Youth World Championships in Australia in December.
UC Davis A (17-13, 2-3 Big West in 2016) - Six wins over top-10 teams in 2016, will be playing U-M to start the Wolverine Invite on March 4.
Group B
Stanford (23-6, 4-2 MPSF in 2016) - Lost to USC in the national championship game after winning it in 2015. Will host Michigan again at the Stanford Invite Feb. 4-5.
Cal (21-10, 2-4 MPSF in 2016) - Subject to Michigan's second win over a top-five team in program history last season. New head coach Coralie Simmons came from Sonoma State.
San Jose State (18-15, 1-5 MPSF in 2016) - Lost to Michigan three times in 2016.
Group C
UCLA (26-5, 5-1 MPSF in 2016) - Defeated Michigan, 5-4, in the NCAA third-place game in 2016. Will play U-M in the fourth game of the UCSB Tournament to start the year.
Michigan (30-8, 7-0 CWPA in 2016) - Won the CWPA championship in 2016 and finished fourth in the country, matching the highest finish in school history.
USA Academy - Members of the USA Water Polo youth system
UC Davis B (17-13, 2-3 Big West in 2016) - Six wins over top-10 teams in 2016, will be playing U-M to start the Wolverine Invite on March 4.
THINGS TO KNOW
Seniors Danielle Johnson, Heidi Moreland and Allison Skaggs were named captains for Team 17 this week.
U-M returns four starters from a team that put together one of the best seasons in program history. Coming back are seniors Danielle Johnson and Allison Skaggs, junior Caroline Anderson and sophomore Kim Johnson.
The Wolverines will have to replace starters Kelly Martin and Ali Thomason in the field as well as starting goalkeeper Julia Campbell.
Michigan returns more than 66 percent of its scoring from 2016 and three of its top five goal scorers. Anderson led the team in assists for the second straight year with a school-record 71 assists a year ago.
Anderson (Palo Alto) and junior goalkeeper Katherine Moore (Atherton) are both from the Silicon Valley area near Stanford University.
