ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty was named to the All-Big Ten first team by the coaches and media, while freshman Hallie Thome picked up all-freshman honors and honorable mention All-Big Ten to highlight the University of Michigan women's basketball team's conference honors announced on Monday evening (Feb. 29).
Flaherty became just the fourth Wolverine in school history to earn a spot on the first team, joining Pollyanna Johns (coaches and media, 1998), Stacey Thomas (coaches and media, 2000) and Jennifer Smith (media, 2004). Flaherty ended the regular season as the conference's third-leading scorer at 22.3 points per game, the eighth-best scoring average nationally. The sophomore topped 30 points six times this season and scored at least 20 points in 18 games. Flaherty has scored 646 points on the year and hit 88 three-pointers, both ranking second on the single-season lists. She is 14 points away from breaking Smith's single-season scoring record of 659 points, set in 2004. Flaherty became the second sophomore in school history to top 1,000 points when she scored a career-best 36 points against Illinois on Feb. 7. She already ranks 15th all-time at U-M with 1,145 career points and is fifth with 166 triples.
Thome was named to the all-freshman team while picking up honorable mention All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media. It is the second straight season that Michigan has had a player named to the all-freshman team. Thome started all 29 games this season, averaging 14.5 points on 64.2-percent shooting. She also added 5.1 rebounds and 1.2 rebounds in 24.7 minutes per game. Thome ranked third among Big Ten freshmen in scoring and comes in at No. 3 in both the NCAA and Big Ten in field goal percentage. Thome scored in double figures in 21 games this season, highlighted by a career-best 31 points against Minnesota on Jan. 31. Her 421 points is the fifth-best total for a freshman in school history.
Senior Madison Ristovski was Michigan's Big Ten Sportsmanship Honoree for the first time in her career. Ristovski appeared in all 29 games, starting 27 times. She averaged 6.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game and is one pace to graduate as Michigan's career leader in games played.
Michigan is the No. 8 seed for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament after tying for seventh place with a 9-9 record. It is just the eighth time in school history that Michigan won at least nine Big Ten games and the 11th time that the Wolverines finished at least .500 in conference play. U-M will face No. 9 Iowa on Thursday (March 3) at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Tip is set for noon and can be seen live on the Big Ten Network.
