EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan baseball team surrendered 11 runs on Tuesday night (April 12), including an eight-run inning, to drop a non-conference contest to Michigan State at the Spartans' home field, McLane Stadium.
The Wolverines scored first in the outing, plating a run in the top of the third inning for a one-run lead. Senior Matt Ramsay led off the at-bat with a one-out single up the middle, advancing to second on a groundout. With two outs, Ramsay stole third for his 15th stolen base of the season, taking home on a Michigan State error.
The one-run lead was short lived, however, as Michigan State responded with two runs on two hits and a Michigan error in the bottom of the same inning to take the lead.
After a scoreless fourth, the Wolverines came out swinging in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score at 2-2. Sophomore Jake Bivens jumpstarted the outing, legging out an infield single and taking third on the following double from Ramsay. The following RBI groundout from junior Carmen Benedetti scored Bivens to tie the score.
Heading into the sixth inning with a tie score, the Spartan offense exploded in the bottom of the sixth for eight runs on six hits and two Michigan errors. The Wolverines used three pitchers in the inning, and at the close of the sixth, Michigan State led by a 10-2 score.
Despite trailing by eight, the Wolverines fought for a run in the top of the eighth thanks to a single from senior Cody Bruder and a long double from sophomore Drew Lugbauer.
The Spartans tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth, but Michigan refused to lay down, adding two runs of its own in the top of the ninth. Bivens led off the inning with a free base on a hit-by-pitch, and both Ramsay and Benedetti fought in extended at-bats for a walk apiece. With bases loaded, senior Dominic Jamett came up clutch with a single down the left-field line, scoring Bivens and Ramsay for an 11-5 score. It marks Jamett's first hit of the 2016 season.
Despite the late surge by Michigan, a double play followed to end the contest.
Senior lefty Evan Hill took the mound for Michigan in the afternoon contest, tossing five innings and allowing just two runs on three hits before surrendering the mound to Michigan's relievers. He did not earn a decision in the outing.
Junior Brett Adcock, junior Mac Lozer and sophomore Jayce Vancena combined to pitch the sixth and seventh innings, allowing eight runs on six hits. In the bottom of the eighth, freshmen Grant Reuss and Jack Bredeson appeared, giving up a run on one hit and two walks.
Overall, Michigan tallied 11 hits on the day, with four Wolverines recorded multi-hit outings.
In less than 24 hours, No. 22 Michigan will return to play with another in-state rivalry contest as the Wolverines host Eastern Michigan. First pitch for the Wednesday afternoon contest is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Ray Fisher Stadium in Ann Arbor. [ Tickets ]
