OMAHA, Neb. -- A six-run fifth inning proved too much on Wednesday (May 25) as the as the University of Michigan baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Wolverines' Big Ten Tournament opener at TD Ameritrade Park. Michigan will now face No. 1-seeded Minnesota on Thursday (May 26, 1 p.m. CDT) in the loser's bracket.
After two scoreless innings, Ohio State got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third with a solo homer, but the Wolverines answered back in the top of the fourth when junior Carmen Benedetti led off with a double, and sophomore Drew Lugbauer followed with a two-run opposite-field homer for a 2-1 lead.
That lead was short lived, however, as the Buckeyes rallied for six runs on six hits and a Michigan error in the bottom of the fifth inning, forcing a 7-2 lead. Ohio State then added another run in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI double to go up by six.
Michigan scored one in the seventh when junior Harrison Wenson led off with a double and eventually scored on an RBI groundout from junior Michael Brdar.
Overall, the Wolverines tallied seven hits in the contest, and freshman Jonathan Engelmann was the only Michigan player to record a multi-hit game.
Four Michigan pitchers appeared in the outing, allowed a combined eight Ohio State runs on 12 hits. The pitching staff struck out seven in the contest, and LHP Brett Adcock was saddled with the loss.
