TULSA, Okla. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team's season came to an end Thursday (May 26) as senior Ronit Yurovsky and the doubles team of sophomore Mira Ruder-Hook and freshman Brienne Minor lost in tiebreakers in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships at Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Yurovsky, a 9-16 seed, dropped a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) decision to Georgia's Kennedy Shaffer in the second round, while Minor and Ruder-Hook could not convert on a first-set victory against No. 5-8 seed Pleun Burgmans and Alizee Michaud of Auburn, falling 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (4) in the first round.
With the first set on serve at 2-2, Yurovsky broke to set off a string of three straight games in which neither player held serve. Yurovsky broke Shaffer again to go up a break at 4-3 and held her serve in the next game for a 5-3 first-set lead. The senior kept the momentum in the next game, breaking yet again for the 6-3 win.
Shaffer broke Yurovsky to begin the second set, jumped out to a 3-0 lead, and never looked back in a 6-3 win.
The players exchanged breaks to start the third but stayed on serve for the next two games. Yurovsky had two break points in the fifth service game, but Shaffer held for the 3-2 advantage. Yurovsky was broken in the next game and Shaffer held her serve for the 5-2 lead. Yurovsky held her serve and then broke on Shaffer's next service game to get back on serve at 5-4.
The Wolverine captain fought off match point at 40-40 to tie the set at 5-5 before breaking for a 6-5 lead. However, she could not seal the match in the next game as the set headed to a breaker. Yurovsky fell behind 5-3 in the tiebreaker and could not make up the ground, falling 7-4.
Yurovsky ends her Michigan career ranked No. 3 all-time at Michigan in singles wins with 117 and was one of two players to make four straight NCAA Singles Tournaments.
Minor and Ruder-Hook recovered from a 2-0 hole in the first set, eventually going up a break at 5-3. Ruder-Hook was broken on her serve in the next game as Auburn got back on serve at 5-5 after holding. Minor put U-M up 6-5 on her serve, and the Wolverines got the break they needed in the next game, grabbing a 7-5 first-set win.
Auburn broke early in the second set and cruised to a 6-2 win, sending the match to a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a third. Michigan fell in an early 6-1 hole and could not recover, dropping the breaker, 10-4.
U-M's season is now compete, as the Wolverines finished with a 23-7 overall record and made the program's first appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
