Lommer Wins Singles Title at ITA Regional

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Chiara Lommer of the University of Michigan women's tennis team won five straight singles matches to take the singles crown at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Tuesday (Oct. 17). The event ran for six days (Oct. 12-17) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
In the championship match against Ohio State's Shiori Fukuda, Lommer raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first set, breaking Fukuda in the first game and rallying from a 0-40 hole in her first service game to hold and keep the break. Lommer broke Fukuda for the second time in the third game to extend her lead to 3-0. Lommer kept it going, extending her lead to 5-0 after breaking Fukuda for the third time. Lommer won on her serve in the ensuing game to win the first set, 6-0. Lommer won four games on deuce points in the first frame.
In the second, Fukuda took a 3-1 lead after breaking Lommer on a deuce point that clipped off the net to kick start four straight breaks of serve between the two. Lommer finally held in the set's eighth game to level the score at four games each. Lommer carried the momentum from her hold into the next game, once again breaking Fukuda for a 5-4 lead. The Wolverine served out the match in the ensuing game, sealing the straight-sets win. It marked the fifth straight singles crown for a Wolverine at this event.
Lommer's run began in earnest after a pair of wins on Monday (Oct. 16) in the quarterfinals and semifinals. In her quarterfinal match against Mia Rabinowitz of Illinois, Lommer jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set en route to a 6-3 win. Lommer came through on a deuce point at 1-1 in the second set to go up a break at 2-1. She extended her lead to 4-1 but was broken in her service game as Rabinowitz got back within two games at 4-2. Lommer once again came through on deuce point while Rabinowitz was serving and then served out the match in the next game.
It was another opponent from Illinois in semifinal round as Lommer squared off against Emilee Duong, who was playing her eighth match of the tourney after making it through qualifying. Lommer took advantage of a Duong double fault on a deuce point in the first set's opening game and did not look back, taking the first set at 6-2.
In the second set, the two players exchanged three straight breaks of serve in the opening games. Lommer took control of the match in the seventh game of the set, breaking Duong on yet another deuce point for a 5-2 lead. Lommer served out the match in the next game, cementing her spot in the final.
Lommer's first match was the toughest, as she outlasted Northwestern's Alex Chatt in three sets (6-1, 6-7, 6-4) in the second round before knocking out Ohio State's Olivia Sneed in straight sets in the third round (7-5, 6-3).
With the win, Lommer automatically qualified for the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships (Nov. 2-5) in Indian Wells, California.
