ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite 24 points from junior Hallie Thome, the No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team fell to No. 3 Notre Dame, 83-63, in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Wednesday (Nov. 29) inside Crisler Center.
Senior Katelynn Flaherty added 13 points and eight assists, while freshman Hailey Brown had 11 points.
The Wolverines got off to a quick 6-2 start on triples from Brown and Flaherty, but Notre Dame went on a 15-2 run over the next 5:30 until an and-one by Thome quelled the momentum. After two free throws from Brown, the Fighting Irish went on a 7-0 run and ended the quarter up 24-13.
Thome became a focal point of the offense in the second quarter, assisting Brown out of a double team on the team's first bucket before scoring two layups of her own. A three-pointer from junior Nicole Munger out of a timeout and then two more Thome layups -- the latter off a feed from Flaherty as the shot clock expired -- cut the lead to 33-28. Despite a corner three-pointer at the buzzer from Munger, Notre Dame went into halftime up nine (43-34).
Michigan kept the game within striking distance in the third after another three-pointer from Munger brought the deficit back down to seven (44-37), but the Fighting Irish rattled off an 8-0 run before a pair of free throws from Flaherty and a Thome hook shot in the lane stopped it. The teams traded points for much of the third quarter and Notre Dame went into the fourth up 62-49.
The Fighting Irish pulled away down the stretch, going on a 15-2 run over the first 2:48 of the fourth quarter to seal the game.
The Wolverines return to action on Saturday (Dec. 2), traveling to Brooklyn, New York, to take on LIU Brooklyn at noon.
