PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan baseball team ended its 2017 season-opening series with a four-game split against Seton Hall on Sunday (Feb. 19) at Tradition Field in the New York Mets Spring Training Complex. Michigan began the day with a 10-7 victory in the completion of Saturday's suspended game before dropping the final game, 8-6. The Wolverines are now 2-2 to begin the season.
The second game of Saturday's doubleheader was halted after five innings due to darkness with Michigan leading, 10-7. The game, scheduled for seven innings, was completed Sunday morning before the start of the series finale, with no change in score.
After a 10-inning walkoff victory for the Wolverines in Saturday's first game, Michigan used that momentum to limit the Pirates to no runs on two hits in the top of the first before getting on the board quickly in the bottom of the inning to force a significant 9-0 lead. The Wolverines took advantage of three walks, two hit batters and five hits to score nine runs before the Pirates even recorded an out. Miles Lewis, Ako Thomas, Jake Bivens and Drew Lugbauer all recorded an RBI in the inning, while Jimmy Kerr picked up three on a base-clearing double.
From there, Seton Hall chipped away at the large Michigan lead, scoring four runs in the top of the third and three in the top of the fourth.
Though the Pirates were able to string together some offense, Michigan added another run in the bottom of the third for the Wolverines' 10th run of the game. Lewis added his third RBI of the game in that inning, scoring Johnny Slater on a sacrifice fly.
When the game resumed Sunday, senior Jackson Lamb tossed the final two innings for his first save of the season. The righty allowed no runs on three hits.
Junior righty Ryan Nutof started the contest, tossing three innings with three strikeouts before freshman LHP Tommy Henry made his career debut. The lefty came in for two complete innings of relief on Saturday, striking out the side in the fifth and ending the day with five strikeouts before the game was suspended. He went on to earn the first win of his career.
Following the completion of the suspended game Sunday, the Wolverines and Pirates battled it out in the series finale, with Seton Hall coming from behind with five runs in the top of the ninth for an 8-6 victory.
Seton Hall scored first in the final contest of the weekend, plating two runs in the top of the second on three hits. Michigan added a run in the bottom of the inning, however, when Harrison Wenson tripled to right-center and scored on an RBI groundout from Michael Brdar.
Michigan then added four runs in the bottom of the third for a 5-2 lead, going ahead for the majority of the contest. Thomas led off with a one-out infield single and stole second before Bivens took first on a walk. Thomas then stole third, and an RBI single from Lewis tied the game at 2-2. Lugbauer then doubled off the wall to score Bivens and give Michigan runners on the corners. Wenson and Brdar combined for back-to-back RBI singles, scoring Lewis and Lugbauer to end the rally with a three-run lead.
Seton Hall added a run in the top of the fifth to come within two, but Michigan regained a three-run lead in the bottom of the sixth when Thomas reached on an error and stole two bags before scoring on a Bivens RBI.
With Michigan leading 6-3, neither team scored in the seventh or eighth innings, but Seton Hall put up a five-spot in the top of the ninth, using a two-run double and a three-run homer to flip the score. Michigan went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Starting left-handed pitcher Michael Hendrickson tossed a career-high six innings in his first start of the season, striking out three and allowing just six hits through 26 batters faced. Junior transfer Austin Batka made his career debut in the game, throwing one scoreless inning with a strikeout.
Overall, four players ended the weekend hitting over .300, including Lewis, Wenson, Engelmann and Brdar. Lewis leads the Wolverines with a .389 average and five RBI.
Michigan will return to action on Friday (Feb. 24), heading to California for the Wolverines' annual spring break trip. The Maize and Blue will kick off action at the Jack Gifford Tournament at Santa Clara, facing Saint Louis. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. PST.
