ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A hard-fought 13-inning affair ended in a 2-1 victory for the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan baseball team on Tuesday (April 11), as sophomore Jonathan Engelmann knocked in the game-winner in the bottom 13th with a walk-off double to defeat Eastern Michigan at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The extra-inning contest is Michigan's third of the season, and the Wolverines have won all three to date.
Following a scoreless first inning, the Wolverines got on the board in the bottom of the second for a one-run lead. Junior Jake Bivens led off the inning with a single through the right side, and sophomore Nick Poirier followed with a base hit to the same spot, allowing Bivens to take third. From there, a double-play ball up the middle allowed Bivens to score and put Michigan up, 1-0.
The next four innings were scoreless, but Eastern Michigan evened things up in the top of the seventh on a double and an RBI single.
From there, the teams battled into extra innings. Though Michigan put runners in scoring position in the eighth, ninth and 12th innings, the Wolverines were unable to convert any runs until the bottom of the 13th.
After a 1-2-3 outing by freshman reliever Karl Kauffmann in the top of the 13th, the Wolverines led off the bottom of the inning with a single from Bivens. From there, Poirier executed the sacrifice bunt to move Bivens into scoring position, and Engelmann came up clutch with a double to deep left field for the RBI and the walk-off victory.
The walk-off win is Michigan's second of the season and brings the Wolverines' record against in-state opposition to 3-0. Engelmann has now recorded the game-winning hit three times this season.
Eight pitchers appeared for Michigan in the effort, marking a season high for the Wolverine pitching staff. Junior Jayce Vancena started on the mound for the Maize and Blue, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing just three hits with a career-high six strikeouts before exiting the game. Sophomore William Tribucher was the first Wolverine out of the bullpen, and he allowed the Eagles' lone run of the day on just two hits over 1.1 innings.
From there, Michigan's bullpen rose to the occasion and held the game scoreless through the next 6.2 innings, surrendering just three hits and one walk. Junior Mac Lozer, freshman Tommy Henry, senior Jackson Lamb, sophomore Jack Bredeson and junior Austin Batka all contributed to the hold, and Kauffmann was credited with his first career win.
