ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior left-handed pitcher Michael Hendrickson of the University of Michigan baseball team was named to the Capital One Academic All-District first team on Thursday (May 4) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He will now advance to the national Academic All-America ballot.
Hendrickson represents one of four Big Ten student-athletes named to the all-district team from region five, which encompasses the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
A biopsychology, cognition and neuroscience major from Saline, Michigan, Hendrickson currently owns a 5-1 record with a 4.50 earned-run average through 52.0 innings pitched this season. After suffering a season-ending injury during March of the 2016 campaign, Hendrickson returned to the mound in 2017 and earned a starting role. In 11 starts, the junior has struck out 46 batters and allowed just eight extra-base hits on the year. The lefty also struck out a career-high eight batters in a 14-1 win over Penn State (Apr. 1) and has tied his career high with six innings pitched in four different starts this season, including an 8-3 victory over Rutgers on Sunday (Apr. 30).
Hendrickson is a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, a Bates Deskins Award winner and an Academic All-Big Ten selection. As a freshman, he earned a U-M Athletic Academic Achievement Award.
Michigan has garnered 10 Academic All-America awards in program history, most recently placing Cody Bruder (second team) on the list in 2016.
With a 33-10 record in hand, the Maize and Blue will return to action on Friday (May 5) when it plays host to the visiting Ohio State Buckeyes in the Wolverines' final Big Ten home series of the 2017 campaign. First pitch for Friday's contest is slated for 6 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium in Ann Arbor.
