NORCO, Calif. -- Incoming University of Michigan water polo freshmen Maddy Johnston and Maddie O'Reilly helped lead 680 Water Polo to the US Club Championship in the 18-and-under division over the weekend.
Johnston, a Menlo Park, California, native, was crowned MVP after leading the team to a 7-0 record on the weekend and 8-6 win in the championship game.
O'Reilly was a new addition to the club this summer after moving from Villanova, Pennsylvania, to join her future teammate before the two of them come to Michigan as part of a six-member signing class. Also competing in the club championship from the signing class were Emily Ritner and Brittany Prentice. Ritner also made it to the championship game but was on the opposite team. Prentice's team placed fourth.Â
This is the second straight summer that Michigan signees have had success with their club teams at the highest level. Last summer Heidi Ritner was named the MVP of the USA Water Polo National Junior Olympics after leading her team to a championship. Ritner went on to earn second team all-conference and broke the U-M freshman wins record with 27, leading the Wolverines to a CWPA championship and trip to the NCAA Championship.
