INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Eight members of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team -- along with two incoming freshmen and one alumna -- participated in the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships, which concluded Saturday (July 1) at IUPUI Natatorium.
Those in action included seniors Gabby DeLoof, Emily Kopas, G Ryan and Clara Smiddy, juniors Catie DeLoof and Becca Postoll and sophomores Vanessa Krause and Miranda Tucker. Alum Ali DeLoof (2013-16) was in the field, as were incoming freshmen Kate Krolikowski and Sierra Schmidt.
Several swimmers put themselves in contention for spots on the 2017-18 U.S. National Team and for the World University Games, though an official announcement is still forthcoming from USA Swimming.
Krause, a native of Chesterton, Indiana, had one of the best performances of the meet, finishing fifth in the 200-meter butterfly (2:09.54) and setting a new school record (long course). Gabby DeLoof swam in two consolation finals, taking 10th in the 200-meter freestyle (1:58.58) and 12th in the 100-meter freestyle (55.17).
Ali DeLoof will be one of those swimmers who will find herself back on the National Team after finishing third in the 50-meter backstroke (27.89) and fourth in the 100-meter backstroke (59.77). Tucker, a transfer from Indiana, had three top-10 finishes and made two finals, finishing third in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:25.82) and seventh in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:07.88).
Schmidt also made two finals, touching third in the 400-meter freestyle (4:07.92) and sixth in the 1,500-meter freestyle (16:19.59).
