ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team could not recover from a sluggish start and struggled to capitalize on late offensive pressure in a 1-0 loss to William & Mary on Friday evening (Sept. 8) in front of 406 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field.
William & Mary netted the game's first goal at the 7:49 mark when Cammie Lloyd fed a pass to Woodard Hooper inside the Michigan 25 to create an odd-man rush entering the circle and giving Hooper a one-on-one with senior goalkeeper Sam Swenson. Swenson came out to challenge, but Hooper sent the shot into the lower right corner of the cage.
The teams combined for just 11 shots in the contest, including three on goal, with William & Mary outshooting the Wolverines, 6-5, and outcornering them, 4-1.
Michigan's best scoring chances came early and late in the game. Sophomore Fay Keijer recorded a pair of shots in the opening seven minutes, twice missing just wide, while sophomore Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort also registered two shots and drew the Wolverines' lone corner of the game, but the ensuing shot was too high.
Michigan applied heavy pressure throughout the second half, particularly over the final 15 minutes, but could not control the ball in the circle, neither getting off quality shots nor drawing penalty corners.
Swenson and William & Mary goalkeeper Morgan Connor both recorded one save in the cage.
Michigan will wrap up the weekend on Sunday (Sept. 10), hosting UC Davis at 2 p.m. on Ocker Field. The Wolverines will also host a neutral-site game between William & Mary and UC Davis at 4 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 9). Admission to both games is free.
