EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team went on a 12-0 run in the first quarter and got 20-point games from senior Katelynn Flaherty and junior Hallie Thome in an 80-59 win over Northwestern on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 28) at Evanston Township High School. The win marked the 400th career victory for head coach Kim Barnes Arico.
Flaherty led the way for the Maize and Blue, going for 27 points and six assists with 20 of her points coming in the second half. Thome joined her in the 20-point club, turning in 25 points and four rebounds. Junior Nicole Munger had eight points, nine rebounds and six assists, with senior Jillian Dunston going for four points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Michigan outrebounded NU, 42-31, and went 17-for-17 from the free-throw line.
Northwestern scored first and jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, but Michigan went on a 14-0 run that featured four points from freshman Hailey Brown, four points from Thome, two from Dunston, two from Munger and a layup from Flaherty. The layup from Flaherty capped the run at the 3:32 mark, giving Michigan a 16-5 lead. The Wolverines led by as many as 15 points in the first quarter and doubled up the Wildcats, 26-13, after the first 10 minutes of action. Â
NU outscored Michigan, 15-11 in the second quarter, but Michigan hit the break with a 37-28 lead behind 19 points from Thome and 10 boards from Dunston.
Michigan scored the first six points of the third quarter to push the lead back to double digits, 43-28, on a Thome basket just 1:45 into the period. Freshman Deja Church found Flaherty for a corner three with 2:07 left in the period to return the lead to 15 after Northwestern kept threatening to get back in the game. Munger grabbed two offensive boards and found Flaherty for a right-wing triple on Michigan's penultimate possession of the third quarter to send U-M to the fourth with a 63-47 lead.
U-M outscored the Wildcats, 17-12, in the final quarter and held NU scoreless for a span of 5:13 to break the game open. The Maize and Blue led by as many as 25 points in the quarter to pick up its sixth straight win.
U-M returns home on Thursday (Feb. 1) to host Purdue in its annual pink game. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. and the game can be seen on Big Ten Network.
