The No. 9 Michigan Water Polo team will be in Northern California this weekend (Feb. 3-4) as they travel to Stanford for four games in the Stanford Invitational at Avery Aquatic Center.
THINGS TO KNOW
• Michigan will be in Bracket B at the Stanford Invitational along with No. 2 Cal, No. 11 UC Davis and No. 17 San Jose State. Bracket A contains No. 1 Stanford, No. 8 Pacific, No. 10 Long Beach State and the Chinese National Team.
• The Wolverines dropped one spot in the Women's Varsity Top 25 after going 2-2 in their home tournament last weekend. U-M fell to No. 4 UCLA and No. 9 Pacific, while they defeated No. 20 Wagner and No. 24 Marist.Â
• Michigan opened the season with a 3-2 record at the UCSB Winter Invitational in Santa Barbara, California, last weekend. The Wolverines' two losses came by a combined three goals to No. 3 UCLA (5-4) and No. 5 Arizona State (5-3).
• U-M has only allowed one team to score 10 goals in nine games. The defense held four of its five opponents on opening weekend to five goals or fewer.
• The Wolverines are listed at No. 10 in the USA Water Polo National Collegiate Rankings, based on the Freeman Ratings System.
• Head coach Dr. Marcelo Leonardi is in his fourth season and owns an 82-34 (.707) record at U-M.
• Sophomore Maddy Steere is off to a hot start, leading the team with 17 goals, 25 points and five field blocks.
• Starting goalkeeper Heidi Ritner missed last weekend with an injury. She is nine saves away from passing Emily Browning for sixth most in school history.
• Senior Caroline Anderson is two goals shy of becoming the 10th Wolverine to score 150 career goals. She holds the career record for assists with 206 and leads the team this season with 11. Â
• Junior Kim Johnson led the team with nine goals in the Michigan Invitational last weekend, matching a career high with five against Wagner. She is 14 shy of 150 career goals. Â
• Junior Julia Sellers needs 10 goals to reach 100 in her career and 10 points to get to 150.
THE TEAMS
• No. 1 Stanford is off to a 4-0 start to the season and will be hosting the tournament.
• No. 2 California has started out the season with a 6-0 record with three wins in both the Rainbow Invite and the Cal Cup. The Golden Bears have beaten No. 6 Hawai'i and No. 7 UC Irvine.  Â
• No. 9 Pacific topped Michigan, 10-7, last weekend to jump them in the polls. The Tigers are 3-1, with the loss coming against No. 4 UCLA.
• No. 10 Long Beach State has yet to play a game this season and will open against Pacific on Saturday.
• No. 11 UC Davis is 2-2 on the year with losses to the top two teams in the country, Stanford and Cal.
• No. 17 San Jose State is 2-3 overall with losses to Stanford, UC Irvine and UC Davis.
• China's National Team is in the United States training and competing against collegiate teams. Michigan faced them twice in exhibition games last weekend.
