IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Despite holding a significant advantage in shots and penalty corners, the No. 6-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team could not keep pace in the second half, falling to No. 21 Stanford, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 6) at Iowa's Grant Field.
Though Michigan never led in the contest, the score was even at 1 at halftime before the Cardinal pulled away with three goals in the second half. It was the most goals allowed by the Wolverines since their season opener against current No. 1 North Carolina (Aug. 25).
Stanford struck first, scoring on its first -- and only -- penalty corner of the game with a rebound at the 10:42 mark, but Michigan responded less than two minutes later, at 12:38, to knot up the game. Freshman Sofia Southam dribbled the ball into the circle from the right side and found the board for her third goal of the season.
The Cardinal scored three straight goals in the second half, including the go-ahead and game-winning tally at the 41:06 mark early in the frame, and after Michigan pulled freshman goalkeeper Anna Spieker for an extra attacker, iced it with a redirection into an open net at 68:05.
Senior Emma Way scored in the final minute on a redirection from junior Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort at 69:01 to narrow the final score. It was her 14th goal of the season -- a new career high.
In all, Michigan outshot the Cardinal, 22-9, and outcornered them, 9-1, in the loss. Spieker earned two saves, while Stanford's All-America goalkeeper Kelsey Bing made 10 stops on 11 U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines (9-5, 5-1 Big Ten) will return to the Mitten for a pair of games next weekend. U-M will travel to East Lansing, Michigan, on Friday (Oct. 12) for a 6 p.m. slate against in-state rival Michigan State before hosting Ball State at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 14) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
