Wolverines Run Past Findlay in Exhibition Contest

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team worked its way to an eight-point lead in the first four minutes of play and never looked back as it cruised to an 84-38 exhibition victory over Findlay on Thursday (Nov. 1) at Crisler Center.
Offensively, the Wolverines shot 57.1 percent from the floor and made six three-pointers on the night. Sophomore Deja Church and senior Nicole Munger paced the offense with 15 points each, with Church draining two triples and Munger making three treys. Also contributing double-digit efforts for the Wolverines were senior Hallie Thome and junior Kayla Robbins with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Freshman Amy Dilk was also a big part of the U-M success on offense, dishing out nine assists and scoring five points of her own.
On the defensive end, Michigan forced 29 turnovers. scored 28 points off Findlay miscues and grabbed 40 rebounds compared to Findlay's 29. Thome led the Wolverines on the boards with six rebounds, and Munger grabbed five for the Maize and Blue to go with three of Michigan's 14 steals on the evening.
The Wolverines closed out the first quarter on a 9-2 scoring run and forced eight Findlay turnovers in the first 10 minutes of play to take a 10-point lead, 21-11, into the second quarter. The Michigan defense continued to work on the back half of the court, forcing six more Oiler miscues and allowing Findlay to score just eight points in the second 10 minutes of play.
Thome paced the Wolverines with six of their 17 points in the second quarter, bringing her total to 12 in the first 20 minutes of play and allowing Michigan to take a 38-19 lead into the locker room at the half.
Church extended the Michigan lead to 22, 43-21, when she dropped her second three-pointer of the game from the top left of the arc with 7:48 to play in the third quarter and forced Findlay to call a timeout seconds later. Anna Hintz made a layup out of the break for the Oilers, but Michigan answered on its next trip down the floor with a layup from sophomore Hailey Brown.
Graduate student Taylor Rooks grabbed an errant shot rebound to start a fast-break play in which she got the outlet pass to Dilk, who in turn passed the ball up court to Robbins for a quick two points, extending the U-M lead to 65-28 in the early stages of the fourth quarter.
Michigan added 19 final points in the fourth quarter to close out the 84-38 victory.
The Wolverines will open up the regular season next Friday (Nov. 9), when they host Mount St. Mary's at 7 p.m. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will get a free T-shirt. All kids in 5th grade and under are invited to take a free throw on the Crisler court after the game.
