CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team stayed within striking distance, largely controlling the second half, but could not overcome an early deficit in a 5-2 loss to No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 11) at the Tar Heels' Karen Shelton Stadium.
The Tar Heels took advantage of penalty-corner opportunities to build their lead in the first half, converting on three of five chances, including one with time expired in the frame. Malin Evert scored UNC's first and game-winning goal -- U-M never lead -- at the 7:51 mark on a cross-cage shot from the right side of the circle. Ashley Hoffman netted the two other Carolina corner goals, at 19:27 and 35:00, on low drag flicks to the left corner.
A pair of rookies scored Michigan's goals, making three on the weekend in their NCAA Tournament debuts. Freshman Kathryn Peterson tallied her fourth of the season at 26:56, finding the left-side netting on a cross-cage reverse chip just inside the scoring arc on the right. Her goal narrowed the UNC lead to one midway through the first half.
Freshman Sofia Southam cut the Carolina lead to two midway through the second, following less than three minutes after a UNC rebound goal, on a Wolverine penalty corner. Senior Emma Way fed the ball to the left side, where Southam buried a shot to the right side of the cage for her fifth goal of the season.
The Tar Heels took advantage of an open Michigan cage -- U-M pulled freshman goalkeeper Anna Spieker with 5:16 remaining -- to ice the game in the waning minutes, at 68:47, earning a fast break up the right sideline and finding Megan Duvernois alone in the circle.
North Carolina outshot the Wolverines, 17-13, but Michigan boasted a 12-3 shot advantage in the second half. U-M also outcornered UNC, 7-5, including 7-0 in the second. Spieker posted eight saves, while the Tar Heels' Amanda Hendry stopped three shots and a UNC defender added a defensive save.
