Late First-Quarter Push Propels Michigan Past Morgan State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Facing a 9-7 deficit midway through the first quarter, the University of Michigan women's basketball team closed on a 13-0 run and led the rest of the game in a 70-47 win over Morgan State on Saturday (Dec. 15) at Crisler Center.
Freshman Naz Hillmon recorded her second double-double in the last three games, going for 17 points, 11 rebounds and three assists in 26 minutes. Sophomore Deja Church turned in a career-high 16 points to go along with four boards and two steals. Junior Akienreh Johnson chipped in nine points, five boards and two assists as nine Wolverines scored in the contest. U-M shot 45 percent (27-for-60) from the floor while holding the Lady Bears to 35.2 percent (19-for-54). The Maize and Blue held a 47-20 advantage on the glass and cashed in on 19 second-chance points.
U-M hit the break with a 32-23 lead after 20 minutes, as Morgan State outscored the Wolverines by two in the second period. Hillmon had eight points at the break, with Church and Johnson each chipping in seven points.
The Wolverines outscored Morgan State, 19-9, in the third quarter behind seven points from Church. Morgan State scored the first bucket of the period to climb within seven points, 32-25, at the 9:10 mark of the quarter, but the U-M defense clamped down and held the Lady Bears scoreless for nearly four minutes. The Wolverines went on a 10-0 during that span, getting four points from Church along with buckets from sophomore Hailey Brown, Hillmon and Kayla Robbins.
U-M led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter en route to the 23-point win.
Michigan will wrap up the non-conference portion of its schedule on Friday (Dec. 21) when it hosts Southern. Tipoff from Crisler Center is scheduled for noon, and the game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
