The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team (4-2), receiving votes in the latest Maverik media poll, hosts 2017 NCAA Tournament participant Marquette (3-2) on Saturday (March 17) at 3 p.m., in the second game of a doubleheader with the U-M women's lacrosse team. The Wolverines look to extend their record-setting home record to 5-0 on the season.
WOLVERINE BITES
• The Wolverines, receiving votes in the Maverik media poll, enter the week with a 4-0 record at home and are one of four teams in the country this season with a 4-0 record at their respective home stadiums. The Wolverines are joined by No. 3 Duke, No. 11 Georgetown and No. 13 North Carolina with matching 4-0 records at home.
• Junior Brent Noseworthy enters Saturday's contest with 10 goals over his last three games and leads the team with 18 goals and 22 points. His average of three goals per game tops the Big Ten and ranks No. 10 nationally. He also checks in at No. 6 in the conference in shot percentage (44 percent) on 18-of-41 shots.
• Noseworthy has marked at least one point in each of his last 20 games and has 55 goals and 10 assists for 65 points over that span. Overall, he has registered a point in 24 of 27 games played in his career. In the three contests during which he did not register a point or shot, he was solely a part of U-M's man-up unit and served as a backup option to U-M's second all-time leading scorer Kyle Jackson (2013-16).
• Freshman Kevin Mack was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Tuesday (March 13) for his five-point output against Air Force. His eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points rank him eighth in the country for freshmen in the point category, while the 12 assists have him three helpers shy of breaking the U-M record for assists by a freshman of 15 (Will Meter, 2012). He has had multiple points in all but one contest this season.
• Eighty-two of U-M's 109 points have come via the junior (50) and freshman (32) classes. Noseworthy's 22 points lead the squad, while freshman Kevin Mack (20), juniors Decker Curran (14) and Rocco Sutherland (12), and freshman Alex Buckanavage (12) check in as Wolverines with double-digit points.
• According to AnalyticsLacrosse.com, Michigan ranks No. 9 in offense, No. 11 in shooting efficiency and No. 14 in adjusted offense.
• Led by junior Nick DeCaprio's 14 caused turnovers that rank No. 7 in the NCAA, U-M checks in at No. 8 in the country in caused turnovers per contest (8.67 per game). DeCaprio also has 17 ground balls on the season, ranking him third amongst all players in the U-M career record books with 88. He has collected at least one ground ball in 29-of-33 games played in his career.
• After being featured primarily as a defensive midfielder in his first three-plus seasons, senior captain Chase Young made the transition to offensive midfielder against Siena (March 3). Young had a career day in the 14-9 win over Air Force (March 9), as he notched the first hat trick of his career. He also set new personal highs in shots (six) and shots on goal (three).
OPPONENT PREVIEW
Marquette
The Golden Eagles enter the contest with a 3-2 overall record after starting the season 3-0 with wins over Jacksonville, Detroit and No. 4 Ohio State. Since the win over the Buckeyes on March 2, Marquette has dropped an overtime contest to Bellarmine, 7-6, and was most recently defeated at home, 12-2, by Robert Morris at home on March 10.
Offensively, Marquette is led by Anthony Orsini with 10 goals and John Wagner (seven goals, five assists, 12 points). The team's strength lies in face-offs and defense, with FOGO Zachary Melillo ranking No. 20 in the NCAA at 59 percent, while the defensive unit led by Nick Grill, ranks No. 12 in the country in scoring defense (8.40 goals per game). Goalie Cole Blazer owns a goals-against average of 8.11 per contest, but ranks 52nd in save percentage (46 percent), and 56th in saves per game (7.00).
The two teams have met each of the past three seasons in exhibition action, but have never faced each other in the regular season.
