ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite falling behind, 6-0, after two innings, the University of Michigan baseball team rallied for eight runs on 11 hits to earn an 8-6 series-opening victory over Bowling Green on Friday afternoon (March 16) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Sophomore starter Tommy Henry tossed a 1-2-3 inning to begin the game, but the Bowling Green bats rebounded in the top of the second as the Falcons rallied for six runs on seven hits.
Facing a six-run deficit, the Wolverines responded in the bottom of the third inning for six runs of their own to tie the game. Freshman Jack Blomgren reached on an error to lead off the inning, and a base hit from sophomore Ako Thomas gave Michigan two runners before a passed ball allowed both to advance into scoring position. An infield hit off the bat of sophomore Dominic Clementi pushed Blomgren home for the first run of the day, and an error on the play allowed Thomas to score from second. Base hits by senior Brock Keener and junior Jonathan Engelmann followed to load the bases with one out. Junior Blake Nelson kept the rally going with a single through the left side that scored Clementi. After a Bowling Green pitching change, freshman Jordan Nwogu ripped a single up the middle for two more runs, and a sacrifice fly by Matthew Schmidt tied the score at 6.
After a scoreless fourth, Michigan added two runs in bottom of the fifth to take an 8-6 lead. Nelson led off and reached base thanks to an infield error, and Nwogu followed with his first career double to give the Wolverines two runners in scoring position. One out later, Blomgren executed a perfect squeeze bunt that scored Nelson and allowed Nwogu to score from second on the throw to first base.
Bowling Green put runners on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but Henry held the Falcons scoreless through the remainder of his time on the mound. The lefty tossed seven innings and struck out seven to earn his second win of the season.
Sophomore reliever Jack Weisenburger took the mound for the eighth and ninth innings and held the Falcons hitless and scoreless while he struck out two to earn his first career save.
Overall, Michigan totaled 11 hits in the effort, which included extra-base hits from Nwogu and Thomas. Blomgren and Nwogu knocked in two runs apiece, and Thomas led the offense with three hits.
