OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- The University of Michigan rowing program concluded its first weekend of the spring season with another successful series of races on Melton Hill Lake at Louisville's Cardinal Invitational on Sunday (March 18). The performance wrapped up a two-day event for the Wolverines and was highlighted by wins from the 1V8 and 2V8 boats.
Concluding its third consecutive spring season-opening event in Oak Ridge, the Wolverines rowed in the late morning portion of today's schedule, with temperatures reaching the low to mid-50s. Skies were partly sunny with little wind, helping competitors navigate the 2,000-meter course in workable conditions.
Michigan's familiarity with the site showed, as the Wolverines accumulated two wins and two runner-up finishes from its four varsity boats.
The first varsity eight boat completed a perfect weekend by posting a time of 5:57.600 to win this morning's race. That was the only sub-6:00 time by any eight boat all weekend. The Wolverines came in ahead of Virginia (6:01.652), Michigan State and Tennessee to complete a perfect season debut for the squad's top unit.
The second varsity eight boat also won its weekend finale in 6:06.166 ahead of Virginia (6:15.556). The 2V also beat Michigan State and Tennessee to help U-M's two eight boats to complete the weekend with a record of 6-0.
U-M's 1V4 and 2V4 boats each took runner-up finishes to Virginia and Yale, respectively. In the 1V4 race, the Cavaliers finished in 6:43.615 while U-M crossed the line at 6:45.431. In the 2V4 race, Yale came in at 6:48.718 while Michigan finished in 6:51.326.
Michigan continues the early part of its spring schedule next Saturday (March 24) in Princeton, New Jersey, when they face off with Ivy League powers Princeton and Brown. The novice program will also be competing that day, but in Columbus, Ohio, against the Buckeyes.
