PRINCETON, N.J. -- The University of Michigan rowing team was represented by three boats at Princeton's Class of 1987 Cup Regatta on Saturday (March 24), and the Wolverines earned mixed results, with a second-place finish from the first varsity eight boat, a win for the first varsity four and a third-place showing for the second varsity eight.
Though early-season Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) polls are not due for another week, it is not a stretch to suggest U-M did battle with a pair of highly regarded opponents this weekend. Eighth- (Brown) and 10th-place (Princeton) finishers at the NCAA Championships last spring, the Ivy League powers welcomed the Wolverines for the first time since 2015, and it set up an excellent day of early-season racing for fans on Lake Carnegie.
The weather in Princeton was mostly sunny, with temperatures in the low-to-mid 30s around race time for Michigan, and they crept into the low 40s toward the end of the 10 o'clock hour, after the 2,000-meter races had concluded.
In the headline event of the day, the first varsity eight race, the Class of 1987 Cup was on the line. Now in its 32nd year of competition, Princeton held a 19-12 edge over Brown headed into today's races and built on that edge with its second consecutive win for the trophy.
It was a fast race from the gun, but the Tigers put themselves in the lead in the first 500 meters. Brown was ahead of U-M after a slower start for the Maize and Blue, but the Wolverines pushed back against the Bears, cutting a six-seat lead to a two-seat lead before passing Brown over the third 500-meter stretch. It was a big move for Michigan, but Princeton held its open-water lead over the final quarter of the race to cross the finish line in 6:55.5. U-M finished second with a time of 7:00.9, with Brown in third at 7:03.3.

U-M's first varsity four boat began the weekend with a strong performance, holding off a late push from Brown down the stretch. U-M maintained its poise and held off the Bears by about two seats, crossing at 7:49.5 with Brown in 7:50.8 and Princeton finishing third.
Next, the 2V8 boat raced to a third-place finish in 7:16.8. Brown won in 7:11.1, and Princeton crossed at 7:14.2.
With just one more weekend of competition before its first home event of the year (April 7 on Belleville Lake), U-M will head back on the road next week for races with Clemson and Virginia on the Scioto River in Columbus, Ohio. The hosting Ohio State Buckeyes will also be in competition, along with Duke.
