EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and the first three singles matches off court to shut out Michigan State, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon (April 21) at the MSU Outdoor Courts. With the win, Michigan wrapped up the regular season with a 10-1 mark in Big Ten action, its ninth straight conference season with at least 10 wins.
Michigan grabbed a 1-0 lead after doubles, taking advantage of fast starts at both No. 2 and No. 3.
At the No. 3 spot, the sophomore duo of Chiara Lommer and Lera Patiuk dropped just one game en route to a 6-1 win.
Senior Mira Ruder-Hook and freshman Alyvia Jones clinched the point for the Maize and Blue, winning 6-2 at No. 2. The Wolverine duo was on serve at 2-1 before winning the next two games to stake itself to a 4-1 lead. It was all Michigan from there as Jones and Ruder-Hook won two of the remaining three games in the 6-2 victory.
Jones was first off court for the Maize and Blue, winning her seventh straight match at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Junior Kate Fahey was right behind Jones, dropping just three games in a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1. Fahey moved her season record to 25-7 with her third consecutive victory at the top spot.
Ruder-Hook clinched the win for the Wolverines, winning 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5. The remaining matches were abandoned, with the teams playing to clinch. Junior Brienne Minor won the first set at No. 2 but was down 5-2 in the second, with Lommer in a first-set tiebreaker at No. 2. Freshman Bella Lorenzini lost her first set but was on serve at 2-1 in the second.
Michigan has secured the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament. U-M will face the winner of the No. 7/No. 10 match on Friday (April 27) at 2 p.m. CDT. The event is being held at Minnesota.
