
Michigan Closes Out Season at No. 14 Penn State

The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team (7-6, 0-4 B1G) closes out the 2018 season, traveling to No. 14 Penn State (8-4, 2-2 B1G) Saturday (April 28) at 11 a.m. The contest will be shown nationally via Big Ten Network, with Joe Beninati and Mark Dixon on the call.
WOLVERINE BITES
• Junior Brent Noseworthy marked four goals to up his season total to 39 in a 10-9 loss to No. 7 Johns Hopkins on Saturday (April 21), breaking his own school record for goals in a season that he set last season (37). He enters the final contest of the 2018 campaign with 45 points, three away from the U-M single-season record for points of 47, held by Ian King (2017). His 39 goals are the second most for a midfielder in the country (Max Tuttle, Sacred Heart -- 41), and his 3.00 goals-per-game average leads the Big Ten and ranks No. 5 in the country amongst all players. His .420 shooting percentage ranks third in the Big Ten, and 44th nationally, and is also second in the country in even-strength unassisted goals (26).
• Noseworthy has marked at least one point in each of his last 27 games. He has scored 76 goals and collected 12 assists for 88 points over that span. Overall, he has ripped off a point in 31 of 34 games played in his career. In the three contests during which he did not register a point or shot as a freshman, he was solely a part of U-M's man-up unit.
• Freshman attackman Kevin Mack ranks second on the team in goals (20), assists (21), and points (41). With three goals and one assist (four points) against Johns Hopkins, he became only the second player in U-M history to register a 20-20 season, with Ian King accomplishing the feat last season. Mack also enters the contest tied with King for the single-season assist record (21, 2017). Mack's 41 points rank him fifth in the country for freshmen, and tops in the Big Ten.
• The Wolverine offense boasts six players with double-digit points and163 of U-M's 201 points have come via the junior (93) and freshmen (70) classes. Noseworthy paces the team with 45 points, and freshman Kevin Mack checks in at No. 2 on the team (41), while freshman Alex Buckanavage (29), junior Decker Curran (27) and junior Rocco Sutherland (18) check in as juniors and freshmen with double-digit points.
• According to AnalyticsLacrosse.com, Michigan ranks No. 15 in shooting efficiency. The metric also rates Noseworthy as its No. 31 player in the country, and Mack the No. 46 player.
• Junior longstick Nick DeCaprio checks in as the Big Ten leader for caused turnovers with 23 (1.77 per game), ranking him No. 14 in the country. He also checks in at No. 1 on the team in ground balls (38), and has collected 16 ground balls and has caused six turnovers in four Big Ten games.
• Midfielder Chase Young was selected 35th overall by the Denver Outlaws in the 2018 Major League Lacrosse Draft on April 18. Young ranks third on the team in goals this season with 12 after he spent the first three-and-a-half seasons of his Michigan career as a defensive midfielder. A defensive stalwart and dynamic athlete, he boasts 81 ground balls in his U-M career, ranking him fifth all-time.
• Young joins Mikie Schlosser (54th selection in 2017) and Kyle Jackson (57th selection in 2016) as the other Wolverines drafted into the league. Schlosser and former Wolverine Mike Hernandez are current members of the Outlaws, while Jackson is entering his third season with the Boston Cannons. Additionally, Ian King was selected by the Charlotte Hounds in the third round of the 2017 MLL Supplemental Draft.
• Junior midfielder Decker Curran sits tied for second on the team in goals with 18 and owns the top shooting percentage in the conference at 43 percent (18 goals on 42 shots). His goal against Johns Hopkins matched his career high for goals in a season with 18.
• Head coach Kevin Conry was an assistant coach for the Nittany Lions during the 2007-08 seasons under then-head coach Glenn Thiel. Five players in Young (Philadelphia), junior Brandon Shima (Haverford), sophomore Sam Bouhdary (Devon), sophomore Matt Dellacroce (Royersford) and freshman JD Carroll (West Chester) all hail from the Keystone State.
OPPONENT PREVIEW
Penn State
The Nittany Lions can clinch a berth in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor with a victory over the Wolverines. A loss, coupled with Ohio State beating Rutgers would also do the trick. PSU would be eliminated with a loss to the Wolverines and a Rutgers win over Ohio State.
The Nittany Lions carry an 8-4 overall record and 2-2 mark in Big Ten play. Sophomore Mac O'Keefe leads the team in goals (34) and points (45), ranking No. 3 in the Big Ten in goals and No. 7 in points (3.46 per game). Nick Spillane leads the squad in assists with 26, a mark that is No. 5 in the Big Ten (2.08 per game).
Longpole Chris Sabia ranks second in the Big Ten in caused turnovers per contest behind U-M's DeCaprio (1.23 per game). Additionally, senior defensive midfielder Tripp Traynor checks in at second on the squad in ground balls with 30.
Gerard Arceri is the top faceoff man in the league and No. 4 in the country at 70 percent, and also leads the conference in ground balls per contest (10.77). Goalie Colby Kneese leads the conference in save percentage (.550), and in saves per contest (10.15). He is also second in the league in goals-against average (8.86 per game).
As a team, PSU leads the conference in ground balls per game with 31, as well as scoring offense (12.85 goals per game) and scoring margin (3.31).
Penn State leads the all-time series against Michigan by a 6-0 margin.
