COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 5-seeded University of Michigan men's lacrosse team defeated No. 4-seeded and No. 9-ranked Ohio State 11-8 in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament on Saturday (April 25) at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (6-8) outscored the Buckeyes (10-4) in three quarters and had eight different goal scorers, while 11 total players recorded a point. Hunter Taylor made 13 saves in the cage and the defense caused seven turnovers. Taylor's 13 saves mark the ninth time this season he has had a double-digit save outing, while Rowan Clay had two caused turnovers and Will Tominovich had one caused turnover and five ground balls.
Offensively, Josh Ford, Nick Roode and Adam Udell scored two goals each, while Udell led the Wolverines with four total points with two assists.
Udell picked up where he left off a week ago in Columbus, opening the scoring on an unassisted goal with just under seven minutes left in the first quarter. Ohio State evened the score on its next possession. Michigan regrouped, with Kade Goldberg bringing the ball up the field two minutes later and dishing it to Roode flashing down the middle to give U-M a 2-1 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Buckeyes tied the score for the second time to start the second quarter before Tay Rodriguez won the ensuing faceoff and took the ball straight down the lane himself to swing the lead back to the Maize and Blue, 3-2, with 12:31 left in the half.
U-M extended its lead to two on a Luke Shannehan goal into the lower-right side of the cage in the closing five minutes of the half and Ohio State came within one with three minutes left in the half. Ford made a heads-up play in the midfield in the final minute as he picked a cross-field pass from the OSU goalie and raced downfield to score the Wolverines' fifth goal.
Taylor made back-to-back saves in the final minute of the half, and Michigan went into the locker room leading 5-3.
Both teams' offense lit up in the third quarter, with U-M narrowly outscoring Ohio State 4-3. Michigan scored three straight after the Buckeyes' tally, with a goal and an assist from Udell, a behind-the-back goal from Bo Lockwood and a CJ Reilly goal. OSU attempted a comeback with a pair of goals; however, Jackie Weller won the faceoff and dished it off to Ford, who ran straight down the lane for the ninth goal of the game, and U-M took a 9-6 advantage into the final 15 minutes.
The Buckeyes pulled within one, scoring back-to-back goals with just under 10 minutes remaining, but Michigan quickly ended the run with two goals of its own in the final nine minutes to move on to the Big Ten semifinals.
U-M will take on No. 1-seed Johns Hopkins in a Big Ten Tournament semifinal matchup on Thursday (April 30) at 3 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
