IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Four hits from freshman Jordan Nwogu and a go-ahead home run by freshman Jesse Franklin propelled the University of Michigan baseball team to a 10-2 win over Iowa on Saturday afternoon (April 28) in the second game of their Big Ten weekend series at Duane Banks Field.
With its first Big Ten loss coming on Friday (April 27), the Wolverines are now 12-1 in conference play.
Nwogu recorded a career-high four hits as Michigan totaled 14 hits on the day. Junior Ako Thomas added three, while juniors Jonathan Engelmann and Blake Nelson ended the day with two apiece.
The Hawkeyes took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out walk and a two-run home run, but Michigan rallied to tie the score in its next at-bat. Sophomore Dominic Clementi and Nelson led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and a base hit by Nwogu loaded the bases. One out later, freshman Jack Blomgren reached on a fielding error that allowed Clementi to score and cut the Iowa lead to one. With the bases still loaded, a sacrifice fly off the bat of Thomas pushed Nelson across the plate and tied the score.
Freshman starter Ben Dragani took the momentum into the bottom of the second, tossing a 1-2-3 inning to send Michigan back to the dugout. The Wolverines took the lead in the top of the third inning with a solo homer by Franklin -- his ninth of the year.
Michigan plated two additional runs in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk by Engelmann and a sac fly from Franklin, then added two more on back-to-back wild pitches in the fifth for a 7-2 lead.
Dragani settled in after the two-run first to hold Iowa scoreless over the next five innings. The lefty allowed just five hits with two walks over six innings to secure the win and improve to 5-0 on the season.
Michigan extended its lead to 10-2 in the top of the eighth on four hits and two walks, including RBI from Engelmann, Clementi and Nwogu.
The Hawkeyes put men on in the bottom of the ninth, but a groundout ended the game with Michigan on top, 10-2.
Freshman Jeff Criswell, junior Troy Miller and sophomore Jack Weisenburger combined to close out the game for Michigan. The trio held Iowa scoreless over three innings of relief and combined to allow just three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
