WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan baseball team took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but could not hold in a 2-1 loss against Purdue on Saturday (May 19) at Alexander Field. With the loss, the Wolverines suffered their first series sweep since 2016.
Michigan (32-19) will advance to the Big Ten Tournament for the sixth consecutive year under head coach Erik Bakich. The Wolverines enter the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 seed Iowa on Wednesday (May 23) at 9 a.m. CDT.Â
Michigan took advantage of free passes in its first at-bat to jump out to a quick lead. Sophomore Dominic Clementi got things started with a base hit to left field, and junior Jonathan Engelmann followed with a walk. Freshman Jesse Franklin was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and a bases-loaded walk to redshirt junior Miles Lewis allowed Clementi to score for a one-run lead.
Sophomore starter Karl Kauffmann did not allow a hit through the first four innings, but a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth sparked a Purdue rally that resulted in two runs and gave the Boilermakers a 2-1 lead.
Neither team scored through the remainder of the game, though the Wolverines threatened with a two-out rally in the top of the ninth thanks to base hits from freshmen Jack Blomgren and Jordan Nwogu. Despite the late push, a groundout ended the rally and the game.
Michigan finished the day with six hits, but was 1-for-9 with runners on base and 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
The Maize and Blue pitching staff held Purdue to a season-low two hits, but issued eight free passes with seven walks and a hit batter.
