ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team earned its second victory of the season as it shut out Western Michigan, 2-0, on Sunday (Aug. 19) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines outshot the Broncos, 14-7, and put seven shots on goal compared to WMU's one shot. Michigan is now 2-0 under first-year head coach Jennifer Klein and the Wolverines have scored five goals in their first two matches of the season, while giving up just one.
"I thought overall we did well," said Klein. "I was happy that we were able to continue to work on the things that we need to work on and focus on us. I am happy that we were able to create two other goal-scoring opportunities and capitalize on them.
"I am also excited we were able to get more players on the field and get them more minutes to increase our depth," noted Klein. "Overall, it was a great weekend. Two games, two wins; it's a good start to the season."
Sophomore Nicki Hernandez scored her first game-winner of the season and her second goal in as many games, finding the back of the net early in the second half off a pass from Meredith Haakenson, who has tallied points in her first two collegiate matches. Sophomore Sarah Stratigakis netted her first goal of the season to give Michigan a 2-0 lead, while sophomore Izzy Nino earned her first career shutout, making one save on the day.
Baily Kohorn was the lone Bronco player to test Nino, while Colleen McKay and Hannah Kahn had two shots each that did not reach the goal. Hannah Sargent took the loss in net, making four saves and allowing two goals.
Michigan saw back-to-back opportunities in the 17th minute of the match when Hernandez and Reilly Martin each put a shot on net, but Sargent was able to get her gloves on both to keep the match scoreless.
The Wolverines' third scoring chance of the match came in the 27th minute, when Abby Kastroll headed a shot at the goal but a WMU defender was placed in the corner of the net to make the team save for the Broncos.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the closing minutes of the first half as the two teams took a scoreless game into the second 45 minutes of play. Michigan outshot Western Michigan, 8-3, putting five shots on goal, while the Broncos did not test Nino in the first half of action.
Hernandez broke the scoreless match for the second straight match, scoring in the 56th minute. She got a pass from Haakenson from six-yards out on the right side of the field. The sophomore midfielder put the ball off the inside of the far-left post and into the back of the net to allow Michigan to take a 1-0 lead.
Hernandez made her second play of the match when she brought the ball into the 18-yard box and placed a ball at the feet of a wide-open Stratigakis. She took the ball up the middle of the box and fired from 11-yards out into the lower-left corner of the goal to extend the Wolverine lead to 2-0 in the 69th minute.
The Michigan backline did not allow another Bronco shot in the closing minutes of the contest as U-M went on to victory.
The Wolverines will be back in action at U-M Soccer Stadium Thursday (Aug. 23) when they welcome Marquette for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
