ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With a dramatic, come-from-behind win by sophomore Ashley Kim, the University of Michigan women's golf team rallied to top Texas A&M, 3-2, today (Monday, Sept. 17) in a consolation semifinal at the East & West Match Play Challenge being played at U-M's Radrick Farms Golf Course. The Wolverines move on to face Oregon for fifth place on Tuesday morning (Sept. 18).
"One of the reasons I love starting our season out this way is because it gets us into a one-shot mentality and how quick momentum can change," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "We had some clutch shots down the stretch today. It was really fun and really great to see us stay in that mindset of one at a time. We are super excited to win today and go ahead and play for fifth tomorrow."
Dropping three of her first four holes on the back nine to start her match with Amber Park, Kim found herself down in the final pairing. As the sun and humidity started to rise for a second day, so did Kim's game as she won holes 16 and 17 to drawn within one. Kim lost the 18th to make the turn two down, but she won the first hole and cut the deficit in half.
After the players halved the next four holes, a par on No. 6 from Kim and a double from Park drew the match even. With that momentum, Kim posted three straight birdies to close out the match, winning Nos. 7 and 9 for a dramatic 2-up victory that sealed the match for the Maize and Blue.
"I was really happy the way I finished today," said Kim. "I was three down at one point, so I just wanted to make it to all square. Making the putt for par on the sixth hole gave me confidence with my putting. Then hearing my teammates cheer for me really hyped me up. After making the birdie putt on the seventh I felt super confident and just wanted to keep the momentum going. It was shocking to me how I finished, but I was so happy to put the last point up for the team."
In addition to Kim's victory, senior Elodie Van Dievoet picked up a 4-and-3 win over Brooke Tyree, while freshman Sophia Trombetta held on for a 2-up victory against Elizabeth Caldarelli.
In the individual bracket, junior Hannah Ghelfi advanced to the championship match following her 2-and-1 victory over Oregon's Bella Setio. Ghelfi was two down after four holes but won Nos. 9-11 to grab a brief one-hole edge before falling back to all square on the next hole. They remained even through 15 holes, and Ghelfi posted back-to-back wins on 16 and 17 to break the tie and close out the match. She will face Ohio State's Adeena Shears for the individual title.
"I gained a lot of confidence yesterday, playing well in the first round," said Ghelfi. "Today, I didn't hit it that well but grinded through it and finished strong enough to pick up the win. That gives me some additional confidence. I cannot wait for tomorrow. I love to play and to compete, and match play is just fun because you are always in it. If you shoot a 12, you could still be in the match. Like today, I was down two, then up two. It can just be a back-and-forth battle and that is really fun."
