BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Senior Siobhán Haughey, senior Yirong Bi and freshman Maggie MacNeil combined for seven event wins as the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team scored a massive road victory, toppling No. 14 Indiana, 172-128, Thursday afternoon (Jan. 17) inside Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
"It was pretty special to see our team step up in scenarios we didn't expect," said head coach Mike Bottom. "In order for us to do well this postseason, it has to be a full team effort. When confronted with a little adversity today, we really rebounded in a positive way, and that was encouraging to see."
The Wolverines found themselves in an early hole after being disqualified on the opening relay, but they wasted little time rebounding, thanks to the distance group. Bi picked the team back up with a six-second win in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:47.24) and was back in the pool mere minutes later for a runner-up swim to Haughey in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.59).
And in the second half of the meet, just when the Hoosiers looked like they were grabbing momentum, Bi and the Wolverines responded with a 1-2-4-5 finish in the 500-yard freestyle (Bi in 4:48.31).
Haughey was sharp Thursday, sweeping the 100-yard freestyle (48.47) and the aforementioned 200-yard freestyle (1:47.49) while also winning the 200-yard individual medley by nearly three seconds (1:58.69). Senior Catie DeLoof put up a couple fantastic in-season swims, winning the 50-yard freestyle (22.51) and taking second in the 100-yard freestyle (48.69).
MacNeil continued her winning ways, as well, taking the 100-yard backstroke (52.88) and 100-yard butterfly (51.70). U-M simply dominated the butterfly events, going 1-3-4-5 in the 100 and 1-2-4-5 in the 200, the latter of which was won by junior Vanessa Krause, an Indiana native (1:58.08).
Swimming in her old pool, senior/junior Miranda Tucker took second in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.45) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.55). Elsewhere, junior Chloe Hicks (1:58.66) and freshman Katie Minnich (2:00.25) went 2-3 in the 200-yard backstroke.
Freshman Allie Klein was impressive in the diving well, taking second in both one-meter (282.90) and three-meter (305.03) springboard. Also of note was the Michigan debut of Ohio State transfer Camryn McPherson, who finished fourth on one-meter (255.68) and sixth on three-meter (280.95).
U-M closed out the meet with a dominant win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the foursome of MacNeil, Tucker, DeLoof and Haughey touched at 3:16.68, more than six seconds ahead of Indiana.
The Wolverines will close out their home schedule Saturday (Jan. 19), returning to Canham Natatorium to face No. 22-ranked rival Ohio State. The meet will begin at 2 p.m. Prior to the meet, the program will honor its senior class with an on-deck ceremony at 1:45 p.m.
