CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team opened up its 2019 season with the annual Windy City Invitational, placing second with a 402.200 Saturday (Jan. 19) at Credit Union 1 Arena. Preseason Big Ten Conference favorite Illinois (403.150) finished first.
Sophomore Cameron Bock (80.650) earned the all-around title, while junior Mitchell Brown (parallel bars) and senior Justin Hopgood (high bar), and sophomore Nick Guy (vault)Â picked up the first event titles of their careers. Michigan, which posted its best Windy City Invitational finish since 2015, also racked up a victory over a No. 4-ranked Minnesota team the Wolverines will face next week on the road.
U-M (4-1) opened its first meet of the season on parallel bars, and Brown marked a new career best of 14.35 for his first event title. After the first rotation, U-M sat in third place with a 66.25. Following a 66.40 on high bar that was paced by a 13.95 that earned the first event win for Hopgood, U-M remained in third prior to moving to floor exericse.
Michigan logged a 69.20 team score on floor exercise to move into second place. Senior Emyre Cole marked a 14.15 to lead the effort and take fourth, while senior Alec Krystek also broke the 14-point plateau with a 14.05 to place sixth.
On pommel horse, U-M was led by Bock, who took fourth with a 13.80, and junior Mack Lasker with a 13.45. The Maize and Blue totaled a 65.15 to hold on to second place with a team score of 266.95. After a 65.90 on still rings that was paced by Bock's 13.30, U-M held second place by .500 over Minnesota heading into the final rotation on vault, while the Gophers took to parallel bars.
On vault, Michigan blew the Gophers out of the water and closed the gap on meet leader Illinois, scoring a 69.25 as a team. Three Wolverines broke 14, led by sophomore Nick Guy (14.50) who placed tied for first, senior Emyre Cole (14.45) who took fourth, and senior Marty Strech who took 11th with a 14.05.

Michigan will open its 2019 dual meet season with a trip to Minneapolis to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers next Saturday (Jan. 26) at 1:30 p.m. CST.
