ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan water polo team will be back in action this weekend for its second tournament of the 2019 season when the Wolverines travel to Palo Alto, California, for the Stanford Invitational (Feb. 2-3).
Team 19
• Michigan will travel back Palo Alto, California to compete in the Stanford Invitational for the fourth straight season. The Wolverines split the four games last season, posting a 2-2 record at the tournament.
• The 2019 team captains are seniors Delaney Cleveland, Kim Johnson and Julia Sellers.
• Michigan is ranked tied for No. 8 in the CWPA Women's Varsity National Top 25, moving up one spot this week.
Last Time Out
• The 2019 season started with the Wolverines posting a 2-2 record at the UCSB Winter Invite (Jan. 19-20).
• The Wolverines held all four opponents to single-digit goal totals. The two losses Michigan suffered over the weekend were to opponents ranked in the top three (No. 1 USC, No. 3 UCLA).
• U-M picked up one win over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 18 Cal State Northridge, 11-5.
• Junior Maddy Steere led the Wolverines in goals (five) and points (nine), while also posting the second-best shooting percentage on the team (.625). Four other players scored four goals each in a balanced offensive attack.
• Sophomore Maddie O'Reilly came out of the tournament as the team leader in assists with five.
• Johnson, Sellers and freshman Abby Andrews all filled up the stat sheet. Johnson had four goals, two assists, seven drawn exclusions and four steals. Sellers had four goals, two assists, five drawn exclusions, two steals and three field blocks. Andrews had four goals, one assist, five steals and three sprints won.
• Three freshmen made their college debuts at the UCSB Winter Invite. Andrews started all four games with five points. Erin Neustrom posted three goals and drew seven exclusions. Ava Morrant played in three of the four games over the weekend.
Opponents
• No. 2 Stanford holds a 12-0 record in the all-time series with Michigan. This will be the first time since 2007 that the Cardinal will not be ranked No. 1 in the country when taking on the Wolverines.
• Michigan will look to even the all-time series with No. 8 Pacific this weekend, as the Tigers currently lead the series, 4-3. Pacific won all three meetings in 2018, with every contest determined by three goals or fewer.
• The Wolverines have been victorious in the last three meetings with No. 13 UC Davis. Michigan posted a 14-9 victory over UC Davis in this invitational last year and lead the series, 8-6.
• U-M also will take on China in an exhibition contest. The two squads played twice at the Michigan Invitational last season with China taking the first game, 13-10, and the second game, 11-4.
Awards and Honors
• Michigan swept the first CWPA weekly awards on Jan. 22.
• Steere received her third career CWPA Player of the Week award after leading Michigan with five goals and nine points at the UCSB Winter Invite.
• Sellers was named CWPA Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
• Andrews was tabbed CWPA Rookie of the Week. She made her debut after joining the team less than three weeks before the season started as a January enrollee at U-M.
Home Opener
• Michigan will host a home tournament March 2-3 with six schools coming to Ann Arbor for the Wolverine Invitational.
• The participating schools include Fresno State, Long Beach State, Marist, Pacific, Saint Francis (Pa.) and UC San Diego.
