PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored three unanswered goals to overcome a two-goal halftime deficit and claim a 4-3 decision at No. 11 Saint Joseph's in an intermittent downpour on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 27) at Ellen Ryan Field. The Wolverines dealt SJU its first home loss since the 2016 season.
Junior Kayla Reed scored the game-winning goal -- and gave U-M its first lead of the game -- at the 53:10 mark late in the fourth quarter, diving to tip in the ball from the right post off a Michigan penalty-corner attempt. It was Reed's sixth goal of the season.
After the Hawks scored twice late in the second quarter to establish its two-goal halftime lead, Michigan responded with two of its own in the opening 6:07 of the third quarter to even the score. Sophomore Katie Anderson reignited the Wolverine offense quickly off an early restart -- following an SJU card -- accepting a pass inside the circle from senior Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort, spinning and hammering a hard shot to the board at the 31:29 mark -- her second goal of the season.
The Wolverines struck again off another penalty corner less than five minutes later, at 36:07, when junior Halle O'Neill, who assisted on the game-winner, scored on the direct shot from the top of the circle. The ball deflected off a Hawk defender in front for O'Neill's first goal of the season. Fernandez Lacort and sophomore Kathryn Peterson earned assists for the stop and insert, respectively.
Two of Saint Joseph's three goals came off penalty corners, including a direct shot in the final minute of the second quarter. The Hawks opened scoring with a corner rebound at 8:20. Freshman Nina Apoola answered with an equalizer five minutes later, at 13:51, receiving a pass near the left post, spinning and firing the ball to the lower-right corner for her second marker of the season.
Michigan outshot the Hawks, 19-10, and outcornered them, 12-8. Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned three saves, while SJU goalkeeper Victoria Kammerinke stopped six of 10 Wolverine shots on goal.
The Wolverines will wrap up the regular-season portion of its 2019 slate next Sunday (Nov. 3), when they host Iowa at 11 a.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field. Admission is free, and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
