ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort took advantage of a scrum in front of the cage to score the game's lone goal in the waning minutes of regulation and propel the No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 1-0 win against Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 5) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
The game-winning goal came at the 53:09 mark -- with less than seven minutes remaining -- after sophomore Sofia Southam put a shot on goal deep inside the App State circle and the Mountaineers could not get the ball cleared from in front of their goal. The ball kicked out to Fernandez Lacort on the right side, and she buried a shot to the opposite lower corner for her second marker of the season.
Appalachian State ramped up the pressure following the goal and largely kept the Wolverines on their heels over the final seven minutes. ASU drew back-to-back penalty corners just 90 seconds later, and Michigan denied a quality shot attempt on both before regaining possession and running off time inside the Mountaineer 25 over the final minute.
In all, Michigan outshot the Mountaineers, 15-3, and outcornered them, 7-5. All three of ASU's shots came off first-half penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Spieker did not face a shot on goal to earn the shutout -- her second complete-game shutout of the season and U-M's fifth overall -- while Appalachian State goalkeeper Rachel Gaines stopped nine of 10 Wolverine shots on goal.
The Wolverines (7-3, 1-1 Big Ten) will remain at home tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 6) for a 4 p.m. slate against in-state rival Michigan State at Ocker Field. It will be Michigan's annual Maize Out game and admission is free. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
