PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The No. 19-ranked and No. 3-seeded University of Michigan women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to No. 4-seed Penn State in an overtime heartbreaker in the Big Ten Tournament final Sunday (Nov. 11) at Yurcak Field.

The Wolverines were the first to get on the scoreboard in the second half on an own goal in the 82nd miunte before a penalty kick for Penn State tied the game at 1 in the 83rd minute.
Michigan tallied 14 shots in the game with six reaching frame, including two from junior Nicki Hernandez. Junior goalkeeper Hillary Beall made five saves.
Junior Sarah Stratigakis stepped up and took a ball from the Penn State defense in the 25th minute of the match and fired a shot from 30 yards out. The shot sailed high and appeared headed for the back of the net, but Amanda Dennis got her fingertips on the ball and forced a Michigan corner kick.
The Wolverine defense came up with some big stops in the final minutes of play, including a huge Alia Martin blocked shot at the top of the 18-yard box and a Beall save off a corner kick.
Neither team could earn an advantage in the opening 45 minutes as both team managed seven shots and went into the locker room scoreless.
The Wolverines came out of the break controlling the possession and not letting Penn State out of its defensive third for the first 10 minutes. The Nittany Lions found some rhythm and attacked on their end of the pitch, but Beall made an impressive play coming off her line and using her entire body to save a shot from Sam Coffey to keep the match scoreless in the 66th minute.
Michigan brought the ball down to its offensive side and won a clearing attempt in the air from Penn State. The Wolverines played the ball out to the wide-left flank to Meredith Haakenson, who worked the ball into Raleigh Loughman. She made a cross pass inside the box to Sura Yekka. A Penn State defender worked her way in front of Yekka, but knocked the ball into the back of the net to score an own goal for the Wolverines to put them up 1-0 in the 82nd minute.
The Wolverines were called for a foul in the box less than a minute later, and Penn State was awarded a penalty shot. The nittany Lions converted the kick to tie the game at 1. Neither team was able to come up with the game-winner in regulation, and the game went into overtime.
Penn State had the first chance in overtime, but once again Beall was there to make the save. On Michigan's next possession, Stratigakis headed the ball out of the air and down toward the net, but the ball went just wide of the right post keeping the match deadlocked at 1.
The Nittany Lions found their golden opportunity in the 92nd minute to earn the victory.
