ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Kayla Robbins led all scorers with 17 points and sophomore Amy Dilk recorded her first career double-double (12 points, career-best 11 rebounds) to lead the No. 25-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team to a 76-55 win over Western Michigan in the season opener on Friday (Nov. 8) inside Crisler Center.
Sophomore Naz Hillmon added 10 points in her first career start. The Wolverines were dominant inside, holding a 48-35 edge in rebounding and outscoring Western Michigan, 50-30, in the paint. The bench chipped in 26 points, as all 11 players saw action.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 10-0 lead just two-and-a-half minutes into the game, with senior Akienreh Johnson and Robbins combining eight points over that stretch. The bench became a factor early because of foul trouble, as freshmen Izabel Varejão and Michelle Sidor each added five points. The Broncos only made two field goals in the opening frame, but kept it close after going 8-of-9 from the foul line. U-M led, 23-12, going into the second quarter.
Western Michigan went on a small spurt at the start of the second quarter to get within eight (29-21), forcing a Michigan timeout. The Wolverines answered with a 10-0 run on a three-pointer from sophomore Emily Kiser, an and-one from Robbins and back-to-back post buckets from Varejão and Kiser. Michigan led, 42-23, at halftime, holding Western Michigan to just one basket over the final eight minutes of the second quarter.
U-M kept going inside to begin the second half, even as Western Michigan switched it up defensively with a zone. The Wolverines went on an 8-0 run out of the break on a layup from Hillmon, back-to-back buckets from Johnson and a layup from Robbins in transition. The spark gave Michigan a 50-23 lead, forcing a Western Michigan timeout. The Broncos then went on a 14-2 run and held U-M without a field goal until the final seconds of the half when Dilk scored on a layup in transition as time expired. The Wolverines headed to the fourth quarter with a 20-point lead (58-38).
The Broncos got within 16 points with 8:14 to play but no further, as a three-point play by Robbins and a layup by sophomore Danielle Rauch put the Wolverines back up by more than 20.
The Wolverines will return to action Sunday (Nov. 10) against Bradley. Tipoff is at 2 p.m. at Crisler Center, and the game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
