ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team snapped a two-game skid, knocking off Penn State, 82-48, Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 31) in front of 5,012 fans at Crisler Center.
Sophomore Amy Dilk was on triple-double watch, finishing with 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Junior Hailey Brown hit three triples en route to 15 points and recorded three blocks in the contest, with senior Kayla Robbins going for 12 points and sophomore Naz Hillmon chipping in 11. Michigan held a 36-31 advantage on the glass and hit eight triples in the game on 42.1 percent shooting from long range.
With the game tied at 7-7 in the early going, Michigan used a 16-2 run for a 23-9 lead at the 1:23 mark of the first quarter. Michigan scored 11 straight during the spurt, capped by a three-point play and another layup from Dilk. Penn State hit a triple with 52 ticks left in the period, giving Michigan a 23-12 lead after 10 minutes.
Brown hit back-to-back triples for a 33-18 lead at the 6:10 mark of the second quarter, Michigan's largest lead of the game to that point. Penn State cut the lead to 11 in the ensuing possessions, but Michigan grabbed a 41-25 halftime lead after senior Akienreh Johnson scored with 11 seconds remaining.
Michigan started slowly in the third quarter before a Johnson triple, followed by a Robbins three-point play on a steal-and-score pushed Michigan's lead to 20, 49-29, at the 5:31 mark. A reverse layup from Dilk capped a 9-0 run, giving the home team a 51-29 lead.
Dilk found sophomore Emily Kiser for a layup over the top with 2:02 left, forcing a Penn State timeout as Michigan's lead grew to 58-30.
The Wolverines did not let up in the fourth quarter, outscoring Penn State, 22-12. Michigan got nine points from freshman Michelle Sidor in the period, including a six-point possession from the freshman. Sidor hit her first triple of the contest, with Penn State being called for a foul away from the ball. She hit another three in the same spot off the inbounds to give her six points on one trip down the floor.
Michigan is back in action Sunday (Jan. 5), when it hosts Michigan State at noon. The game will be Michigan's "Crash Crisler" game and a Maize Out, with fans encouraged to wear maize. The contest also will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
