CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Junior lefty Tommy Henry dominated The Citadel, tossing a complete-game, one-hit shutout of The Citadel as the No. 17-ranked University of Michigan baseball team downed the Bulldogs, 2-0, on Friday (Feb. 22) at Joe Riley Stadium. Henry also struck out a career-high 13 batters.
Henry (2-0) entered the game fresh off a career-high tying nine-strikeout effort in last week's season-opener against Binghamton. He tied that mark Friday had already tied that mark through six innings. The Citadel did not registered a hit until the seventh inning, but sophomore catcher Joe Donovan quickly erased the runner attempting to steal second base.
Henry faced the minimum of 27 batters and was never threatened, earning the final strikeout on the final batter of the game. He needed just 88 pitches while throwing first pitch strikes to 21 of the batters he faced. Through two starts, Henry has collected 22 strikeouts and allowed seven hits, one walk and no runs in 15 innings of work.
Michigan got on the board in the second inning when senior designated hitter Blake Nelson sent a hard single to left field to score redshirt senior left fielder Miles Lewis who rocketed a double off the fence in left field earlier in the inning.
Lewis and Nelson recorded two hits apiece as the duo recorded singles in the seventh inning. Michigan came up empty-handed in that frame before adding an insurance run in the eighth. Junior first baseman Jordan Brewer fought off two strikes before singling to center field with one out in the frame. He then stole second and third base before junior right fielder Christan Bullock plated him with a sacrifice fly to right. Â
The Wolverines and Bulldogs will resume game two of their three-game series on Saturday (Feb. 23) with first pitch slated for 4 p.m. from Joe Riley Stadium. The game will be streamed live on the SOCON Digital Network.
