PEORIA, Ariz. -- A career-best tally of 215 (-1) by junior Hannah Ghelfi guided the University of Michigan women's golf team to the program's second-lowest 54-hole total in program history (861, -1) and a seventh-place finish at Wisconsin's Westbrook Spring Invitational. The Wolverines closed the event with an even-par 288 today (Monday, Feb. 25).
"When we teed off this morning, we had a legitimate shot at winning the tournament," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "The scores were tight all week, and if a couple players got hot we were going to be right there. I was pleased overall with how our team bounced back with any adversity we faced, particularly on the 36-hole day. It was really fun to make so many birdies."
For the second straight weekend the Wolverines were led by a career-best performance. This time it was Ghelfi, who lowered her career-best 54-hole tournament total by seven shots. She recorded her first career top-20 finish, tying for 19th, and led U-M for the second time this season.
Using a pair of birdies and 15 pars, Ghelfi opened with new career-best 71 (-1) to guide U-M to a 289 first-round team total Sunday morning. She carded four more birdies and another 12 pars in the afternoon to better her newly minted career low with a second-round 70 (-2), putting her tied for 11th. Adding in junior Alisa Snyder's first career sub-70 round (69, -3), Michigan recorded a season-low 284 (-4) total in the second round and was tied for fourth after 36 holes at 573.
With momentum heading into the final round, the Wolverines reached as high as third place during the day before a few miscues dropped U-M out of the top five. In the end, a 71 (-1) from sophomore Ashley Kim -- her fourth sub-par score in her last six rounds -- and a career-low-tying 71 (-1) from freshman Ashley Lau propelled U-M to its even-par final round.
Snyder (76-69-72), Kim (73-73-71) and Lau (72-74-71) all tied for the 27th spot with 217 (+1) tallies. Senior Elodie Van Dievoet added a season-low 220 total (73-72-75) to tie for 48th to round out U-M's starting five.
"This weekend was very solid," said Ghelfi. "The course really set up well for me, and it was a lot of fun to play. Overall, I was pretty consistent over the last two days. I am excited for what is next."
"Hannah's very consistent play and finishing even par for the entire event was awesome," added Dowling. "She was a couple swings away last week in Florida, and she was very focused in her practice to get ready for this weekend.
"Also, Alisa (Snyder) posted her first round in the 60s for her collegiate career, and her confidence is soaring. We are very much looking forward to coming back out to Arizona for our spring break and continuing this momentum."
The Wolverines will make a brief stop back in Ann Arbor before heading back to Arizona for their annual spring break training trip. During the week off from school the Wolverines will practice and play throughout next week before closing the trip by playing in Arizona's Wildcat Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, March 11-12, at Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson.
