ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team picked up two singles wins but it was not enough as No. 24-ranked Virginia took a 5-2 win over the Wolverines on Wednesday afternoon (March 13) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Virginia took the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 2. After winning a 6-3 match at No. 3, Virginia rallied from a 3-0 hole in the match at No. 2 to clinch the match's first point with a 6-4 victory. The Virginia wins were sandwiched around a 6-3 victory at No. 1 for junior Giulia Pairone and senior Kate Fahey. The U-M duo jumped out to a 5-1 lead and hung on for the victory.
Virginia extended its lead to 2-1 with a straight-sets win at No. 5.
Fahey put Michigan's first point on the board, winning 6-3, 6-4 at the top spot. Fahey won the final three games of the first set to grab the early lead. Fahey broke for a 4-2 lead and both players held their serves the rest of the way as Fahey sealed the win.
The Cavaliers stretched their lead to 3-1 moments later with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4.
Michigan needed to win all three remaining matches on court at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6. U-M won first sets at both No. 2 and No. 6, with Virginia taking the first set at No. 2.
U-M entered concurrent tiebreakers at No. 2 and No. 3. At No. 3, senior Brienne Minor jumped out to a 3-1 advantage in the breaker, but Virginia answered with six straight points to take the match and seal the team win for Virginia.
At No. 2, Pairone was tied at 5 in the breaker but Virginia won the final two points to send the match to a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set.
Freshman Anca Craciun breezed to a 6-0 first-set win before falling in a 5-2 hole in the second. The freshman battled back to tie the set at 5 but dropped a 7-5 decision. Craciun broke early in the third at 2-1 and held the break the rest of the way en route to the 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 win.
Pairone was last on court, finishing her 10-point tiebreaker after Craciun won. Pairone fell behind in the early stages and could not catch up, falling, 10-5, as Vivian Gozman grabbed a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (5) win for the Cavaliers.
Michigan will resume Big Ten action this weekend, hosting Nebraska on Saturday (March 16) and Iowa on Sunday (March 17). Both matches will begin at noon. Â
