ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a game delayed twice by weather, the University of Michigan baseball team cruised past visiting Manhattan College, 5-1, at Fisher Stadium on Thursday (March 14) in the Wolverines' home opener.
Michigan broke open a scoreless game in the third inning on a pair of doubles with senior Blake Nelson leading off the inning with a two-bagger down the left-field line and sophomore Jack Blomgren lacing an opposite-field double to the wall in right field.
Nelson was in the thick of things in the fifth inning as well as his double to the left-center field gap scored junior Jordan Brewer (single) to make it 2-0. Sophomore Jordan Nwogu singled Nelson home later in the inning for a 3-0 lead. It was all that Michigan would need behind starting pitcher Tommy Henry, despite the lefty ace having his night cut short due to the weather issues.
Henry improved to 5-0 on the season with another dominant effort. A rain delay and later lightning delay ended his day after just 67 pitches but his performance was definitive -- no runs on two hits and five strikeouts over six efficient innings.
In 35 innings pitched this season Henry has allowed just two runs while striking out 49. Â
Following the game's second delay, Nelson plated the Wolverines' fourth run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. The home team added another run in the eighth when redshirt senior Miles Lewis led off the inning with a double down the left-field line and eventually came around on an RBI groundout by senior Jimmy Kerr.
Manhattan scratched for a run in the ninth inning but never threatened as the Jaspers managed just four hits in the game.
Nelson and Nwogu collected three hits apiece. Alex Cerda had two of Manhattan's four hits. Â
The teams resume their four-game series Friday (March 15) at 4 p.m. at Fisher Stadium. Admission will be free for fans under the age of 18 and 2019 season posters will be given away.
