ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After spending the first four weeks of the 2019 season on the road, the University of Michigan baseball team (9-4) will host Manhattan in its four-day, four-game home opening series beginning Thursday (March 14) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
• The weekend series will mark the first meeting between the Wolverines and the Jaspers in program history. Manhattan comes into the week with a 4-8 record and is set to host New Jersey Institute of Technology on Tuesday in its home opener. The Jaspers last appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2012 as the Metro Atlantic Tournament champions, but were eliminated in the regional.
• The Wolverines are now 9-4 after spending the first four weeks of the season on the road and traveling over 8,700 miles to play contests in Florida, South Carolina and California. During that time, Michigan outscored its opponents 69-38 and posted a .248 team batting average while the pitching staff held opponents to a .196 average.
• Michigan posted a 3-4 record during its annual spring break trip to California, which was highlighted by an upset win over No. 2-ranked UCLA as well as a series win at Cal State Northridge. Junior ace Tommy Henry picked up two additional wins during the trip and is now 4-0 on the season with an impressive 44 strikeouts, which ranks second in the nation.
• Michigan has posted a conference-low 2.58 earned-run average through the first 13 games, which ranks 14th-lowest among Division I schools. The Wolverine pitching staff also leads the Big Ten with 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings (32nd in NCAA), and 3.21 walks allowed per nine innings (42nd in NCAA). The staff has recorded double-digit strikeouts in eight of 13 games and has struck out at least one batter per inning in 10 of 13 games. Michigan pitchers have also combined to allow just 6.26 hits per nine innings, which ranks 11th in the nation and second in the Big Ten conference.
• Offensively, Michigan is tops among Big Ten teams in stolen bases (24), and triples (four). The Wolverine offense also ranks in the top three among conference squads in slugging percentage, doubles and sacrifice flies. Michigan's .975 fielding percentage also ranks in the top three in the Big Ten.
• Following a tough 1-3 week, the Wolverines dropped out of three national polls but are still ranked in the remaining three. The Maize and Blue is ranked No. 23 by Baseball America, No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 26 by the NCBWA. Michigan is the only Big Ten Conference team to appear in more than one national poll.
