ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Jordan Brewer connected on a pair of home runs -- one of them a grand slam -- and collected six RBI as the University of Michigan baseball team rapped 17 hits in a 23-2 victory over Manhattan on Friday (March 15) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan started immediately in the first inning as sophomore Jesse Franklin collected the first of his three RBI with a sharp single through the right side.
In the second, Michigan loaded the bases on three walks with no outs. Sophomore Jack Blomgren sent an RBI single into right field for a 2-0 lead. Michigan added four more runs in the inning, two of which came on a fielding error and two on a sinking two-run double from redshirt senior Miles Lewis.
The wheels came off for Manhattan in the third as U-M scored seven times before recording an out. Blomgren delivered a two-run single up the middle and Brewer launched a grand slam deep over the left-field wall to make it 13-0. Another run came home on a bases-loaded hit batter. An inning later, Brewer unloaded a solo home run high over the left-field wall for a 15-0 lead.
Junior Karl Kauffmann improved to 4-1 after throwing four scoreless innings and striking out four batters against no walks in a planned short outing on a cold day at Ray Fisher Stadium. Senior Jack Bredeson struck out three batters in a scoreless seventh while freshman Jack White and redshirt junior Joe Pace also threw scoreless innings in their first pitching appearances of the season. Â
Blomgren led Michigan's attack with a 5-for-5 effort to go with five RBI while Brewer and Franklin each had three hits.
Michigan and Manhattan will play game three of their four-game set at the Wilpon Complex on Saturday (March 16) at 2 p.m. Fans under the age of 18 will be admitted free all weekend.
